Position Overview
The General Maintenance Repair Tech Senior - Fire Extinguisher Technician is responsible for independently or in a lead capacity performing a wide variety of maintenance and emergency repair tasks to University buildings, including physical structure, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. A key responsibility of this position is managing the campus-wide fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance program to ensure all extinguishers meet compliance standards and are fully operational. This role includes participating in a regular program of inspection and repair of university extinguishers across campus. This position requires operation of University vehicles.

Monday-Friday 7:30 am-4pm

Job Description
50% - Maintenance, Fire Extinguisher Program, and Lead Support:
Provide lead support for the campus fire extinguisher program, including troubleshooting, inspection, repair, replacement, and preventative maintenance of fire extinguishers as needed. Complete monthly inspections for buildings where inspections were not completed by supporting staff. Ensure all fire extinguishers are maintained in compliance with applicable safety regulations, fire codes, and university policies. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for inspections, maintenance activities, and device locations.

Serve as a subject matter resource regarding fire extinguisher use and basic compliance requirements, providing guidance to campus partners as needed. Coordinate with custodial staff, maintenance teams, and other university stakeholders to address compliance concerns, support inspections, and plan corrective actions or maintenance activities.

40% - Emergency Response and system support:
Respond to emergency calls involving equipment failures, alarms, or system disruptions. Assist with fire alarm inspections, basic troubleshooting, and minor repairs as time, training, and operational needs allow. Provide support for other life safety, electrical, or related systems as appropriate.

Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergencies as required. Work occasional planned or unplanned overtime during emergency situations. Maintain tools, supplies, and parts inventory necessary for assigned responsibilities. Assist other maintenance units as needed, including participation in snow removal and related duties during inclement weather.

10% - Other Duties as Assigned:
Perform other related tasks as directed to support departmental needs and campus safety.

Position Requirements
  1. Reach, grasp, hold, lift and place moderately heavy loads and heavy loads occasionally (50 lbs) with or without accommodation.
  2. Perform work above normal heights, in confined spaces and extreme temperatures (hot and cold) inside and outdoors.
  3. Operate work issued vehicles for transporting sta and materials
  4. Work occasional planned and unplanned overtime as needed including responding to after- hours emergencies as needed.
  5. Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
  6. Must have a valid driver's license by the time of hire and maintain that license throughout employment.
  7. Must digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.

Required Qualifications
  1. High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
  2. Three (3) years of experience in a skilled craft area. Certificate from a vocational school or an associate's degree in a building or mechanical trade area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  3. Valid driver's license by the time of hire and maintain the license throughout employment.
  4. Currently possess or have the ability to obtain fire extinguisher certification within the first six months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Prior experience and certification in maintaining fire extinguishers.
  2. Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, equipment and materials associated with a variety of skilled crafts and building trades as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of skilled crafts and building trades as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Ability to read and correctly interpret blueprints, electrical or plumbing schematics as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Experience working in a university, college or multi-building campus environment.
