Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati, Hoxworth Blood Center, Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) is recruiting a full-time (100% FTE) Clinical Lab Scientist (Level 1 or 2) for second shift. We seek motivated individuals with strong critical thinking, communication, and independent work skills. Experience in blood banking is preferred. Responsibilities include performing routine and complex quality control testing on blood and blood components, as well as high-level evaluation, review, and interpretation of test results. Candidates must be able to perform with minimal supervision, be proficient in computerized data entry and retrieval functions, and communicate effectively across departments.




Compensation and Schedule:


Sign on Bonus: $5,000


Starting pay range (based on experience):


Clinical Lab Scientist 1 - $28-30/hour


Clinical Lab Scientist 2 - $31-34/hour


Shift Available: (8 or 10 - hour shifts)


Second Shift: 12:30 or 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM


Shift differential: $4/hour


Candidates will be expected to work rotating weekends - 1 to 2 weekends per month - 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM

Essential Functions

  • Perform testing, interpret and record results.
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing.
  • Comply with cGMP requirements (in appropriate areas) regarding test interpretation and validity of results.
  • Communicate and report test results to external customers, as well as internal.
  • Respond to other healthcare professionals' questions regarding results.
  • Clerically process incoming patient blood samples. Compose written case reports for hospital patient referrals, when appropriate.
  • Prepare laboratory reagents. Develop and perform reagent evaluation studies and other special projects with supervisory review.
  • Quarantine and discard blood products with positive test results, when appropriate.
  • Maintain equipment and clean, safe work area.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need.

Clinical Lab Scientist 1:



Required Education



  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Technology, or other related biological science.
  • Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.



Required Trainings/Certifications


Require MLT or MLS Registry Eligibility and must obtain ASCP certificate within one year of date of hire.


Required Experience


No experience required.

Clinical Lab Scientist 2:

Required Education



  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Technology, or other related biological science.
  • Six (6) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.



Required Trainings/Certifications


Require MLT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), BB(ASCP), or SBB(ASCP).


Required Experience


Two (2) years of relevant experience.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, or other related biological science.
  • Six (6) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Trainings/Certifications

Some labs require MLT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), BB(ASCP), SBB(ASCP).
