Description

A full-time postdoc position is available at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College in the Keller research group. The successful candidate will become part of a transdisciplinary research group in the area of climate risk management. The research group addresses two interrelated questions. First, how can we mechanistically understand past and possible future changes in the coupled human earth systems? Second, how can we use this information to design sustainable, scientifically sound, technologically feasible, economically efficient, and ethically defensible risk management strategies? We analyze these questions through mission-oriented basic research covering a wide range of disciplines such as statistics, engineering, decision science, Earth sciences, economics, and philosophy.

The successful candidate will co-lead research to improve the characterization and understanding of (i) uncertainties, (ii) system dynamics, and (iii) decisions related to flood risks. Examples of the adopted research approaches are provided at this web-page, this overview paper, and these example papers (1, 2, 3). The candidate will ideally have a strong quantitative background in relevant disciplines (e.g., statistics, applied math, operations research, engineering, or Earth sciences) and interests in collaborating with neighboring disciplines. The position provides unique opportunities for research, education, outreach, decision support, and professional development. There is strong support for activities such as co-mentoring students, gaining teaching experience, developing teaching materials, and proposal writing. The successful candidate will enjoy ample opportunities to co-design their project portfolios and to engage in transdisciplinary research collaborations. The successful candidate will be mentored by a team of experts in relevant disciplines. Information about research group alumni is available at the lab web-page.
