Feed the Kids: Kitchen Assistant

There are thousands of children who rely on free or reduced lunch during the school year, and when school ends many would go hungry without help. Feed The Kids is a 10-week summer meals program for children living in Milwaukee's underserved neighborhoods. About 1,500 meals are distributed Monday-Friday, June-August, to 21 different neighborhoods, parks, and street corners on Milwaukee's north and south side. The meal consists of a sandwich, fruit, snack, and juice or water. The Salvation Army has provided more than 2 million meals through the Feed The Kids program since 1990. This is a seasonal position. Employment dates are from June 22, 2026, through August 21, 2026; Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. (Times may be adjusted due to work volume.)

The Kitchen Assistant provides the Feed the Kids program coordination as it relates to meal preparation, meal distribution, volunteers, cleanliness of food preparation and kitchen areas and service delivery.

About the role:



  • Primarily work in the food prep area; be visible and responsive to volunteers. Make sure there is program staff always present in the food prep area.
  • Assist program staff in meal assembly and meal distribution.
  • Be sure that the food prep area and kitchen are cleaned daily according to the checklist provided.
  • Monitor food inventory.
  • Monitor non-food supplies.
  • Assist with rotation of meat, cheese, bread, and fruit daily.
  • Communicate volunteer needs with Community Outreach Manager or Facilities Services Manager.
  • Prepare enough meat, cheese, etc. for next day.
  • Ensure that all food is handled, stored, and thawed according to Department of Health standards.
  • Act in a manner consistent with The Salvation Army Mission Statement to ensure its effective delivery of all services.


Education and Experience/ Skills and Requirements:



  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good verbal skills
  • Good public relations skills
  • Ability to lift at least fifty pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
