Job Overview:

The Department of Surgery at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is seeking a Medical Assistant to provide support to the clinical staff by assisting with patient visits, including directing patient flow in and out of the exam rooms, taking patient vital signs and communicating with clinical staff about patient readiness for visit. The Medical Assistant will also maintain stock in exam rooms, work with administrative staff to ensure supplies are maintained and ordered as needed and assist administrative staff as necessary to meet patient needs, and capture all related facility charges in EPIC.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 6 months of relevant experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred:

  • Bilingual Spanish
  • Phlebotomy and EKG
  • Knowledge of electronic medical record (EMR) system, Epic

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • BLS Certification approved by the American Heart Association
  • Medical Assistant Certification: AAMA, AECA, AMCA, AMT, NAHP, NCCT, NCMA, or NHA

Scheduling Requirements:

  • 8:30am - 4:30pm
  • Monday - Friday
  • Full-Time

Essential Functions:

  • Prompt and courteous communication with front desk staff
  • Monitoring for return of all laboratory and diagnostic testing
  • Upon receipt of diagnostic results, pulls charts and presents to physician
  • Confirms all new patient appointments and provides physician with a daily list
  • Monitoring and stocking of exam rooms, including weekly check of expiration dates
  • Responsible to secure desk coverage when duties require absence from the patient's area
  • Performs all other related duties as requested by the physician, nurse and/or supervisor
  • Daily preparation of patient charts for physician consultation and exam in accordance with Center policies
  • Maintains sensitivity, privacy and confidentiality when interacting with all patients and their family members
  • File patient charts in a file room by the end of each week. Secure all charts in locked areas at the end of the day
  • Preparation of the patient for a physician exam. This includes escort of the patient into the room and obtaining vital signs per MD routine
  • Participates in and completes all mandatory and unit-based competency performance evaluations as required by the department and the institution
  • Patient charts are obtained for purposes of return phone calls by the MD and prescription refills. Messages are appropriately attached to the patient chart for MD/RN review
  • Answers telephone in a professional and efficient manner. Directs all clinical calls to a nurse or physician. Documents phone messages accurately with the correct time and date, person calling and reason for the call
  • Other duties as assigned
