Position Summary

The Parker Lord APS Division is seeking a Process Engineer I with a chemical background to join our Structural Adhesives Process Development team at our technical site in Cary, NC. This role is primarily based in a laboratory and pilot plant environment and includes designing and executing experiments, producing pilot-scale batches of chemical adhesives, conducting laboratory testing, and presenting results through written reports and verbal discussions. This position may also interface directly with manufacturing plants and travel as needed. Primary responsibilities include process development and scale-up for new products, as well as support of existing products through quality and process improvement efforts, including data analysis, clear communication of results, and resolution of chemical process engineering challenges.

Responsibilities

Process Engineering Specific Duties:

  • Designing, running, and troubleshooting chemical pilot plant batches to manufacture and analyze chemical adhesives for new product scale-up projects. This role will take ownership of existing chemical equipment and new systems.

  • Interfaces with internal technical, sourcing, EHS and business teams, external equipment suppliers, and manufacturing plants.

General Duties:

  • Operate in a safe, high-quality, and ethical manner while following Parker Lord policies.

  • Able to collaboratively work as part of a multidisciplinary, global project team to develop and accomplish goals and objectives.

  • Routine and non-routine technical assignments of moderate to low complexity and variety; frequently make decisions independently.

  • Determine appropriate technical approach, follow accepted procedures, develop new procedures, and communicate conclusions/recommendations effectively.

  • Oversee engineering equipment, involved in the specification and purchase of new equipment.

  • Conduct training for staff as needed.

  • Support technology transfer to manufacturing sites and assist with troubleshooting in production to meet yield, quality and product performance targets.

  • Utilize Lean process tools like FMEA and statistical data analysis to make data-driven decisions.

  • Communicates frequently and professionally via written and verbal analysis and results.

  • May require travel up to 10%.


Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Education: A BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or similar with 1 year of work experience. Preferred experience with chemical adhesives, polymeric materials, or in a laboratory environment.

  • Possess strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to safely work in a chemical and mechanical laboratory environment.

  • Technical lead on low complexity, short-term projects. Leads portions of projects as a team member. Failure to achieve goals can normally be overcome without serious effect on the team. Ability to address root cause with guidance, and corrective actions for low complexity field failure or experiment failures.

  • Independently determines and develops approaches to solutions under only moderate direction. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.

  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Ability to apply basic statistics and interpret and communicate results.

  • Ability to utilize computerized equipment and computer software packages including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, Word, JMP, Minitab, and SAP.

  • Visual acuity to read and understand chemical container labels.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
