Perioperative and Anesthesia Services Director

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Accountable for the comprehensive administration of key functions, roles, systems and processes in assigned areas of responsibility for Perioperative and Anesthesia Services. Acts as division and service line leader for assigned areas and provides key leadership for patient-centered care delivery in support of the Medical Center's mission, vision and beliefs.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Keeps abreast of current clinical trends and technology for areas of responsibility and provides a system perspective for managers and staff.

3. *Serves as Director for all perioperative departments including perfusion and anesthesia services ensuring alignment with the Medical Center Plan for Patient Care services; leads a team of managers who are each responsible for the supervision of patient care and the services provided within the individual departments and coordinates with other leaders and Directors.

4. *Develops and fosters ongoing positive business and service relationships with surgeons and anesthesiologists utilizing the perioperative services area. Is visible and accessible on a regular basis in the perioperative environment and holds regularly scheduled meetings with key physician leaders as needed to promote quality, collaboration and partnership.

5. Leads team activities that foster strong physician involvement and decision making for operations of the operating suite.

6. *Ensures that clinical processes are consistent with best practices and that the perioperative departments are resourced appropriately to meet patient care needs.

7. Utilizes national benchmarks to evaluate staffing patterns and skill mix.

8. Accountable for ensuring that processes are in place to manage clinical emergencies and for facilitating the operation of internal and external disaster planning related to the divisions services.

9. *Activates resources and integrates perioperative and anesthesia services with other departments to foster patient-centered care.

10. *Ensures consistency in interpretation and application of the care delivery model, mission, vision and beliefs of the organization.

11. *Leads and manages the finances of the perioperative service areas with a strong focus on balancing costs, quality and service.

12. *Develops capital and operating budgets with input from managers for areas of responsibility in accordance with budget timetables.

13. *Prioritizes capital expenditures based upon identified need, positive ROI, enhanced service level and requests.

14. *Works with managers and staff to ensure expenses are within budget parameters for areas of responsibility; reviews and analyzes budget and other management reports and takes action as needed to ensure effective and efficient operations.

16. *Utilizes lean processes for evaluation and improvement of clinical and business operations within perioperative services.

17. *Develops and sustains standards of care and practices that are consistent with current trends and best practices for existing programs/services.

18. Develops programs and services based on needs analysis and a strong business plan and facilitates their implementation and evaluation.

19. Implements the Medical Center Corporate Compliance Plan; assists with review of the Bryan Medical Center's plan for Patient Care Services and recommends adjustments.

20. *Meets or exceeds Joint Commission and other regulatory and accreditation standards.

21. Participates in risk management activities.

22. Resolves clinical concerns by patients, families and physicians.

23. Provides leadership and participates in Medical Center improvement initiatives and teams as assigned.

24. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

25. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of patient care, procedural and perioperative environment, anesthesia care, and hospital systems.

2. Knowledge of quality improvement practices.

3. Knowledge of best practice financial and business methodologies for budgeting and business development.

4. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

5. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

6. Ability to develop written policies and procedures, memoranda and performance evaluations with measurable behaviors.

7. Ability to schedule, direct, counsel and evaluate employee work and performance.

8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments including diverse patient populations.

9. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment related to changing patient needs including working with patients with acute, chronic and complex disease processes and those who are dying.

10. Ability to balance and prioritize diverse management and clinical responsibilities.

11. Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and work as a team member.

12. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

13. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Current licensure in the State of Nebraska in a professional clinical discipline relevant to perioperative services (registered nurse, respiratory therapist, perfusionist), or current licensure in the State of Nebraska in an advanced practice discipline (physician's assistant, nurse practitioner, certified registered nurse anesthetist) required. Master's degree in Business Administration, Health Administration or related clinical practice area required.

Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in a clinical position required. Minimum of three (3) years' experience in a leadership role required. Strong previous experience in the procedural/perioperative environment including accountability for physician relations required.
