Job Summary
TDIndustries is seeking an experienced Journeyman Sheet Metal Mechanic to support commercial new construction projects. This role is responsible for the layout, fabrication, installation, modification, and testing of HVAC ductwork and sheet metal systems in accordance with project drawings, specifications, codes, and TDIndustries' quality and safety standards. The Journeyman Sheet Metal Mechanic works closely with project teams to deliver safe, efficient, and highquality HVAC air distribution systems on complex commercial job sites.
Essential Duties
- Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, building plans, shop drawings, specifications, and submittals to plan and install HVAC sheet metal systems.
- Perform layout and installation of rectangular, round, and spiral ductwork, including supply, return, exhaust, grease duct, and specialty systems.
- Install and support air handling units, VAV boxes, exhaust fans, louvers, grilles, diffusers, and related HVAC equipment.
- Measure, cut, assemble, hang, and secure ductwork using S & drives, flanges, welds, screws, bolts, sealants, and gaskets per SMACNA and project standards.
- Inspect structures and hanger locations to identify obstructions and ensure proper support without compromising building integrity.
- Set up and operate soldering and welding equipment as required for sheet metal fabrication and installation.
- Perform system testing (air, smoke, and leakage testing) and assist with inspections and commissioning activities.
- Install temporary air seals, protection covers, and protective materials to maintain system cleanliness during construction.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas while complying with TDIndustries safety programs, PPE usage, PTSP, and 6S standards.
- Safely operate lifts, ladders, scaffolding, and power tools on active construction sites.
- Coordinate work with pipefitters, plumbers, electricians, and other trades to maintain schedule and quality expectations.
- Provide mentoring and informal leadership to apprentices and less experienced team members.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support project completion.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Formal sheet metal or HVAC craft training preferred.
Licenses & Certifications
- TDLR HVAC Registered Technician (if required by jurisdiction/AHJ).
- OSHA 10 preferred (or ability to obtain).
Experience
- Minimum 4+ years of commercial HVAC sheet metal experience.
- Proven experience on largescale commercial new construction projects such as healthcare facilities, schools, offices, stadiums, data centers, or multifamily developments.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, duct fabrication, installation methods, SMACNA standards, and building codes.
- Ability to independently perform layout and installation with limited supervision.
- Proficient in use of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and installation hardware.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and in physically demanding environments.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problemsolving skills.
