Overview

The Engineer will have technical responsibility over network distribution equipment such as network transformers, network protectors, and associated peripherals, sensor and communication equipment. The Engineer will also oversee and manage projects related to the design and modification of Network Equipment. The Engineer will work with vendors to create and update designs, review and approve design packages, approve network equipment prototypes. The Engineer will also monitor equipment performance and sensor data and issue work requests accordingly. The Engineer will also create, review and update the Con Edison Network Distribution Equipment specifications, purchase and test specifications as well as operation and maintenance specifications. The Engineer will assist the field in troubleshooting any equipment installation or operation issues.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Create, review and update the Con Edison Network Distribution Equipment specifications (Purchase and Test, Operation and Maintenance).
  • Monitor, analyze, and resolve equipment field problem issues that would impact the safe and reliable operation of the networks.
  • Leverage real-time asset data to perform predictive analytics and remove units before failure. Work closely with data science teams to enhance machine learning and AI models to identify failure candidates.
  • Work with vendors and other departments within Con Edison to develop new equipment and/or to improve the functionality of existing devices.
  • Take a project management role in various special projects that encompass Distribution Engineering technical areas including, but not limited to, Network Equipment, SCADA, Overhead, Unit Substations, , Civil Engineering and Environmental and Safety. Correspond with different field groups, departments, regions, vendors and the PSC on various special projects and initiatives such as Stimulus, R&D, etc in Distribution Engineering.
  • Oversee and drive special projects, and pursue the continual improvement of equipment and system design as well as system operation. Assist Engineers or other Distribution Engineering staff in the performance of their tasks as necessary to accomplish the objectives of the Organization. Has the capability to assume full responsibility and a leadership role when responding to emergency field problems in his/her field of expertise.
  • Present on technical topics related to Con Edisons distribution practices and special projects.
  • Review and update engineering specifications in accordance with operating procedures, IEEE, NESC, ANSI, etc..
  • Create and sustain a workplace environment that fosters professionalism, honesty, concern, excellence and teamwork. Perform duties inherent in most supervisory positions such as training, motivating, disciplinary, and maintaining personnel under his or her supervision.
  • May perform other related assignment or task as needed.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering and minimum of 3 years Field or engineering work experience.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering
Relevant Work Experience
  • Must possess knowledge and/or experience in the installation, maintenance, and testing of electrical equipment such as transformers, network protectors, circuit breakers, relay protection, and related sensors. Required
  • Self-starter with excellent organizational, analytical, decision-making, and administrative skills with a strong attention to detail. Required
  • Must be flexible, able to handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines. Strong project management skills are required. Required
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to diplomatically interact with internal and external customers, support staffs and various levels of management. Required
  • Must have knowledge of relevant corporate environmental and safety procedures. Required
  • Must be effective at presenting technical information and representing Distribution Engineering to other departments, non-technical groups and executives. Required
  • Must have strong knowledge of the appropriate Engineering and Operating Procedures and Engineering Specifications. Required
  • Must be able to understand and review engineering sketches, drawings, one-line and riser diagrams. Required
  • Must be able to provide guidance in the creation of these drawings and schematics. Candidate must demonstrate proficiency with Computer applications (MS Office, CAD Applications, etc.). Required
  • Able to travel to vendor sites and attend conferences Required
  • Able to respond to field request and emergencies during off hours Required
  • 1-2 years of supervisory experience Preferred

Additional Physical Demands
  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
  • Field visits may require walking and ladder climbing.
