Reports To: Chief Financial Officer and Chief of Operations, dotted line to Ken Horstman, VP of HR

Salary Range: $150,000 - $185,000, dependent on education/experience/qualifications

Position Overview:

The Human Resources Director in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) is responsible for driving a strategic and service-oriented human resources function within the college. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and Chief of Operations and in partnership with the Office of Human Resources, the HR Director oversees all aspects of human resources, including talent acquisition and retention, performance and talent management, employee and labor relations, classification, compensation, and compliance. This role partners with college leaders to develop and implement strategies that foster a diverse and inclusive work environment and promote community and belonging. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of building relationships across all levels of the institution, collaborating with leaders to drive employee engagement and delivering high-quality HR services to constituents. The CEHD HR team is currently comprised of the HR Director and 8 HR Professionals.

Location and Work environment: This is a hybrid position and will require 2 days on campus. Any in-person work will be located on the UMN Twin Cities campus.

Work Schedule: Typical business hours, Monday through Friday

Responsibilities:

Strategy (30%):

  • Lead the assessment, planning, development, and execution of CEHD's short-term and long-term human resources strategies, including anticipating emerging issues and trends.
  • Promote and enable a culture that enhances diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Collaborate with CEHD senior leadership to establish fair and sustainable compensation strategies and processes to support effective recruitment, retention, equity, merit and awards.
  • Guide the development, analysis and interpretation of collegiate HR data reporting to promote effective decision-making.

Consulting (30%):

  • Consult with CEHD leaders on HR issues, including employee and labor relations, organizational changes, workforce and succession planning.
  • Provide coaching and support to leaders on performance management and employee development.
  • Partner with the Associate Dean of Graduate Education and Faculty Development to consult on faculty affairs and promotion/tenure administrative processes.

Employee / Labor Relations (25%):

  • Lead employee and labor relations, including investigations, disciplinary actions, grievances, and corrective action processes.
  • Serve as the unit/college liaison to labor organizations, equity and diversity offices, and other compliance offices.
  • Promote a positive, respectful, and inclusive work environment through engagement initiatives, diversity programs, and employee support.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws, labor agreements, University policies, and rules.
  • Provide guidance and support to managers on performance management, employee recognition, conflict resolution, and retention strategies.

Operations (15%):

  • Ensure college compliance with federal and state laws, University policies, contracts and rules to mitigate risks.
  • Manage and direct a service-oriented HR team that provides high quality support to all levels of the college, including flawless execution of daily HR operations (e.g. workforce data management, staffing).
  • Collaborate with leaders across the college to create efficient HR processes to maximize productivity, retention and engagement.
  • Establish training, guidance and oversight of all HR activities performed across the college.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Human Resources or related field plus 10 years of related professional HR experience.
  • Working knowledge of employment laws, rules, and regulations affecting human resources.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning and project management, including organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with ambiguity, use sound judgment, and exercise independent judgment and discretion.
  • Proven ability to work and lead in a complex, multi-layered, and collaborative environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal relationship and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience managing and directing a team to achieve great results.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, or related field
  • PHR, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or equivalent HR certification
  • Experience in higher education or large, complex, unionized organizations
  • Experience with HR systems (e.g., PeopleSoft) and technological tools for HR management
  • Skills in change management, conflict resolution, and employee engagement strategies
  • Experience leading a team of professionals, including experience in HR management, HR development, HR consulting, and payroll management.Proven success in workforce planning and organizational design.

Pay Range: $150,000 - $185,000/year; depending on education/qualifications/experience
