Physical Therapist (.6 FTE) - Muskego-Norway School District

The Muskego-Norway School District is seeking a dedicated Physical Therapist to support students across the district.

Position Overview
The School-Based Physical Therapist (PT) is a part time position (0.6 FTE) following the school year calendar. The PT provides specialized services to students with disabilities, as well as consultation to educational staff, when such services are required for a student to access and benefit from their special education program.

As a related service provider, the PT supports student functional mobility, access, and participation across all school environments, including classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and community-based settings.

Position Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy by the American Physical Therapy Association from an accredited university.
  • Licensure: Current school physical therapy license (License 817) from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

Goals and Responsibilities

  1. Identification and Planning: Conduct comprehensive evaluations focusing on functional performance in the school environment. Interpret evaluation findings as an active member of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team.

  2. Intervention: Develop and implement evidence-based direct and indirect services. Focus areas include:

  • Functional mobility, balance, and coordination.
  • Performance of motor tasks and safe transfers (e.g., from wheelchair to desk or toilet).
  • Providing and monitoring adaptive, prosthetic, or protective equipment.
  • Aerobic endurance and lifelong fitness activities.
  1. Program Administration: Manage physical therapy services, including establishing procedures and maintaining necessary equipment and space.

  2. Collaboration and Training: Offer expertise and consultation to teachers, aides, and administrators regarding student movement and environmental access. Train staff in the use of mobility devices and injury prevention techniques.

  3. Professional Ethics: Adhere to the APTA Code of Ethics and state rules governing practice. Maintain professional growth through continuing education.

Essential Job Functions

  • Conduct appropriate evaluations for special education and prepare all required documentation, including individual patient records for every student treated.
  • Develop and routinely update a written physical therapy treatment plan based on the student's IEP goals.
  • Travel between school buildings to provide services across the district.
  • Physically lift, transfer, and position students and heavy adaptive equipment as necessary.
  • Collaborate with parents and community medical providers to bridge the gap between clinical and educational therapy models.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk a minimum of 2 miles per day.
  • Ability to bend, stand, and stoop multiple times per day.
  • Ability to place students weighing up to 80 pounds in Crisis Prevention Intervention approved protective holds as defined by Act 125.
  • Ability to maneuver students weighing up to 180 pounds in wheeled mobility equipment (wheelchair, stroller, etc).
  • Ability to position or support an assisted transfer of a student weighing up to 180 pounds.
