Position Overview

Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Director of Broadcasting, the Operations and Traffic Assistant position assists in on-air broadcast operations, programming, and scheduling for KENW-TV.



Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional customer service in all interactions with students, staff, and the general public.
  • Ensure a high level of quality control for the on-air TV digital broadcast programming.
  • Assist in training and supervising master control operators.
  • Ensure that satellite recordings and out-of-house programs are received and prepared properly for broadcast.
  • Assist in maintaining servers, videotape, and archive libraries.
  • Each month, assist in scheduling programs for broadcasting, recording, downloading, or by shipping from other outside sources.
  • Assist in maintaining and ensuring the accuracy of broadcast, record, and EAS logs.
  • Ensure that all transmitters are operating within FCC standards and that weekly EAS tests are conducted as required by the FCC.
  • Generate and maintain operator shift work schedules and fill-in shifts when necessary.
  • Assist in producing interstitial material, including on-air promotion.
  • Produce underwriting credits, public service announcements, station IDs, and edit programs as assigned.
  • Assist in responding to questions and requests from viewers.
  • In coordination with other professional staff members, assists in planning for both current and future technical needs of the Broadcast Center.
  • Keep up-to-date with PBS and other network programming requirements, documents, and procedures.
  • Regular and predictable attendance required
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in broadcasting or a related field and two years of experience in TV programming or operations or a closely related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of non-linear editing systems, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • A high degree of computer literacy is required.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of digital TV systems, including broadcast TV automation.
  • Knowledge of computer programs related to the interaction of programming and traffic to operations.
  • Knowledge and supervision of operators importing and processing data, including traffic logs, playlists, and generating metadata.
  • Knowledge and supervision of operators ingesting program material, recording programs via satellite or fiber circuits, prepping programs for air, and appending playlists.
  • Ability to operate video tape machines, routers, switchers, and associated digital systems.
  • Ability to ensure a high level of quality control with proper adjustment of video and audio levels and maintaining a careful watch over on-air operations.
  • Supervise and assist in the production of all interstitial material, including on-air. See that out-of-house programming is shipped back in a timely manner.
  • Assist in responding to questions and requests from viewers.
  • Assist in maintaining the ProTrack scheduling system, the video servers, and the archive libraries.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to maintain friendly customer service and professional demeanor with all constituencies.
  • Project coordination and organizational skills and the ability to not only work as a team player but must have the ability to ensure others do the same.
  • Ability to present a professional, pleasant, and cooperative attitude in coordinating communication between staff and the general public.

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed both inside and outside of normal work hours.
  • Work consists of exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
