Essential Job Responsibilities:
Summary/Objective:

The Safety Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the development and continuous improvement of the terminal's safety program. Strives to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free workplace while working with all departments, including union and non-union, to foster a culture that prioritizes the health and safety of all employees, contractors, visitors and public.

* Plans, implements, and coordinates programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries and illnesses.
* Identifies and appraises conditions which could contribute towards accidents by performing Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and evaluates potential severity of injuries resulting from the condition.
* Conducts or directs research studies to identify hazards and develops appropriate controls to manage the hazards.
* Develops proactive safety programs for incorporation into operational policies of organization.
* Compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data related to exposure factors concerning occupational illnesses and accidents and prepares reports including the OSHA 300 log.
* Maintains liaison with outside organizations, such as fire departments, and first responders to assure information exchange and mutual assistance.
* Devises methods to evaluate safety program and conducts or directs evaluations.
* Evaluates technical and scientific publications concerned with safety management and participates in activities of related professional organizations to update knowledge of safety program developments.
* Be present for the Safety Talks. Make sure they are given daily; and have the Forman add anything you think he did not cover in his talk but should have and anything you may have observed during your vessel inspection.
* Make sure all employees wear proper PPE (hard hats, vests, and safety toed shoes) where and when appropriate for the job being performed.
* Investigate all ILWU and IAM injuries and report to OSHA when required to do so.
* Responsible for the training of all superintendents in accordance with state and federal laws.
* Work with Safety Director, General, Terminal, and Vessel operations managers to ensure the PCMSC (Safety Code) is being followed.
* Attends monthly meetings with all member companies and union locals to discuss serious injuries and their possible prevention.
* Work with SSA lawyers to mitigate OSHA citations.
* Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Safety management or similar field desired
* Minimum of 5 years of progressive responsibilities in areas of field safety and health program management
* Certified Safety Professional designation is desirable
* Strong organizational skills
* Familiarity with State and Federal regulatory systems and structures
* Basic understanding of industry safety standards
* Familiarity with terminal operations
* Commitment to continual development and renewal of required certifications
* Ability to read, comprehend, and recognize safety standards and issues
* Computer skills consistent with generating safety reports, data analysis, and communications



Supervisory Responsibilities: No



Work environment:
* Required job duties include working in office settings as well as outdoor environments, which may include variable weather conditions
* Exposure to computer screens.
* The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
* Regular travel required to visit sites and regions
