Minimum Qualifications	High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications	Requires a two-year degree in laboratory sciences (or equivalent technical training) and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in a biological or diagnostic laboratory, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated advanced technical proficiency in bacteriology and ability to perform and troubleshoot complex laboratory methods is required. Preferred qualifications include experience in a veterinary or diagnostic laboratory setting, with demonstrated upper-level technical expertise in bacteriology. Experience with Salmonella culture, isolation, and typing is strongly preferred.
Position Summary	This position at the Poultry Diagnostic & Research Center ( PDRC) supports a microbiology laboratory focused on detection and identification of avian pathogens, including viruses and bacteria (primarily Salmonella). The role requires advanced technical expertise to perform and oversee specialized testing (culture, serology, typing, and molecular diagnostics) on avian samples, including troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues and non-routine cases. Responsibilities include supporting research projects; developing, validating, and updating laboratory protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); and applying independent judgment to interpret submissions and determine appropriate testing strategies. Additional duties include data analysis and reporting; maintenance of laboratory operations; and communication with faculty, staff, students, and clients. The position operates under minimal supervision and requires independent decision-making with moderate impact on laboratory operations. The individual will train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to undergraduate and graduate students and may contribute recommendations to improve laboratory methods and workflows. Occasional after-hours, weekend, or holiday work is required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies	Advanced knowledge of clinical bacteriology, including isolation, identification, and differentiation of bacterial pathogens using standard and complex methodologies. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot assays and interpret results in routine to complex diagnostic scenarios. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound technical judgment. Proven ability to train and provide technical guidance to students or junior personnel. Proficiency in data management and analysis, including use of Excel, and applied quantitative skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Duties/Responsibilities	Oversee preparation and maintenance of cultures, media, and reagents. Prepare and inoculate clinical and research samples into appropriate substrates. Independently perform and manage the completion of routine to complex bacteriological tests and procedures, including troubleshooting and quality control.

Duties/Responsibilities	Provide technical and administrative support for research projects, including coordination and execution of animal studies. Perform laboratory animal husbandry, inoculations, vaccinations, sample collection, and necropsy/euthanasia in compliance with approved protocols.
