Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Job may require additional hours as required

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities: This position provides enterprise-level leadership and accountability for all transmission system engineering activities supporting Evergy's high voltage transmission system. The role serves as the technical authority for transmission system design and operation, ensuring safe, reliable, compliant, and cost effective engineering solutions aligned with business objectives. The position leads and develops a highly skilled engineering organization, manages departmental budgets and capital estimating, and establishes engineering standards and material specifications. Working collaboratively across construction, planning, maintenance, procurement, and operations, the role enables successful execution of transmission and substation projects, supports field construction and emergency response as needed, and promotes a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous improvement in support of system reliability and customer satisfaction.

Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide leadership and strategic oversight for all transmission system engineering activities supporting the high voltage transmission system.
  • Serve as the technical authority for transmission line design, standards, materials, and operational support.
  • Lead, develop, and retain a high performing transmission system engineering team.
  • Establish, maintain, and enforce transmission system engineering standards and material specifications in compliance with regulatory and industry requirements.
  • Manage department O&M budgets and oversee capital project cost estimating and financial performance.
  • Ensure safe, reliable, and cost effective engineering solutions that support system reliability and customer needs.
  • Partner cross functionally with construction, planning, maintenance, procurement, and operations to deliver successful projects.
  • Provide engineering governance, risk management, and quality assurance across transmission system projects.
  • Support field construction activities and emergency response efforts, including storm restoration as needed.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement across the engineering organization.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering
  • Job specific experience or other related experiences that are both required and/or preferred:
    • Incumbents at this level must possess at least 10 years of related experience in transmission system engineering.
    • Demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity, managing a team of people, setting direction and deploying resources is required. Must demonstrate the ability to develop long term strategic department plans, functional strategies and priorities and successfully implement these throughout the department and/or division.
  • Additional experience required or preferred:
    • Leadership experience and previous supervisory (direct and/or indirect) experience required
    • Professional Engineering registration preferred
    • Demonstrated specific experience in transmission system design and/or construction.
    • Knowledge of or experience with line routing, transmission line modeling and structural analysis using PLS software and foundation design using FAD Tools software, PowerBase, ASPEN/PSSE modeling preferred

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of field construction management, industry construction practices, and the electric power delivery system.
  • Working knowledge of system operations procedures, company safety requirements, and transmission, substation, and distribution construction standards.
  • Working knowledge of transmission line, substation and system protection design and operation
  • Knowledgeable of Bulk Electric System NERC standards and requirements
  • Strong decision-making, organizational, and multitasking skills, with the ability to oversee multiple projects across different locations.
  • Effective leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong project management, cost analysis, negotiation, and human relations skills.
  • Ability to develop and manage departmental O&M budgets and support the transmission line capital budgeting process.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and the ability to identify and address safety-related issues.
  • Strong analytical skills to develop engineering plans and provide sound technical recommendations.
  • Ability to understand, evaluate, and clearly communicate complex technical concepts.
  • Proven ability to select, lead, mentor, and develop employees while executing organizational goals and objectives.   • Licenses, Certifications, and/or Testing:
    Successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
    Professional Engineering registration preferred

Working Conditions:
Working conditions will vary from office to field environment. Must be able to work additional hours, both indoors and outdoors, on short notice in all types of weather.
