Job Description

The Department of Mining and Explosives Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to support research activities related to sustainable battery materials processing and characterization. The position is part of a DED-funded project focused on the recovery, synthesis, and testing of battery precursor materials produced from recycled lithium-ion batteries. The successful candidate will work on the preparation, characterization, and electrochemical evaluation of in-house recovered battery precursor materials, with emphasis on linking upstream recycling and hydrometallurgical processing to downstream battery performance.

The position offers an opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary research environment focused on critical minerals, battery materials, and sustainable energy technologies.

The duties will include:

  • Design, organize, and conduct research in the field of critical materials related to battery production
  • Collect, interpret, and analyze engineering test data and summarize findings
  • Prepare complete documentations and technical reports of the research activities related to the assigned projects
  • Write peer-reviewed journal articles and present work at conferences
  • Write proposals for external funding
  • Provide guidance for graduate and undergraduate students as needed
Qualifications

Qualifications include:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery materials, precursor synthesis, battery recycling, hydrometallurgy, or electrochemical characterization
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques such as XRD, SEM/EDS, ICP, XPS, or electrochemical testing methods
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
