THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is looking for a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic who wants to make a difference in Lancaster County. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on repairing, maintaining, and inspecting a variety of vehicles and equipment used by the Department of Transportation. The work ensures safe operation and supports the daily needs of the county. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Repair: Repair and overhaul vehicles, machinery, and mechanical components across a wide range of fleet equipment
  • Preventative Maintenance: Carry out routine maintenance tasks to keep engines, systems, and equipment in safe operating condition
  • State Inspections: Conduct official safety and emissions inspections and complete required documentation
  • Diagnostic Work: Identify mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and determine proper repair methods
  • Safety Practices: Maintain a clean work area, follow safety procedures, and report hazards or injuries immediately
  • Field Adjustments: Make necessary adjustments and minor repairs during field operations to ensure safe performance

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Some travel, overtime, and shift work may be required. Work hours are subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires the employee to obtain a tanker endorsement within the probationary period.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
