About KARL STORZ
From the operating room to surgery centers, and everywhere in between, KARL STORZ North America is a global leader in medical technology and advanced visualization solutions. We design specialty innovations, smart instruments and devices, integrated ecosystems, and intelligent imaging-to build a more connected, software-enabled operating room. As an independent, family-owned MedTech company, we ambitiously think in generations instead of quarters to improve patients' lives around the world.
About the Role
The Electro-Mechanical PWB Design Engineer III is responsible for designing and developing electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical components, printed wiring boards (PWBs), and supporting systems for medical and industrial imaging products. This role applies established engineering practices to deliver reliable, manufacturable solutions while supporting electronic design, testing, verification, and debugging activities throughout the product lifecycle. The ideal candidate combines strong electronic and mechanical engineering expertise with a passion for innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement in a highly regulated medical device environment.
What You'll Do
- Contribute to the design and development of medical imaging systems as part of cross-functional project teams.
- Support Project Managers by identifying design constraints, trade-offs, risks, and technical considerations.
- Develop, modify, and maintain PWB layouts for imaging system products.
- Participate in project design reviews and provide technical recommendations.
- Generate and export 3D CAD models for integration with other engineering systems.
- Implement engineering changes into existing designs based on project, mechanical, and manufacturing requirements.
- Transfer design data to PWB and stencil fabrication vendors and generate layout check plots for evaluation.
- Perform testing, verification, and debugging activities on printed wiring board assemblies (PWBAs) using oscilloscopes, DVMs, power supplies, and signal generators.
- Create and modify electronic schematics to support product development and troubleshooting efforts.
- Design and develop test fixtures and tooling to improve verification and manufacturing processes.
- Contribute to engineering process improvements and the development of mechanical design procedures and best practices.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on product quality, durability, manufacturability, and customer outcomes.
- Ensure all activities comply with KARL STORZ quality standards, medical device regulations, and long-term product reliability requirements.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
- 5-7 years of experience designing electro-mechanical and/or opto-mechanical systems.
- 1-3 years of experience in PWB layout and design.
- Proficiency with PWB design software, preferably Altium Designer.
- Experience using CAD software, particularly SolidWorks.
- Knowledge of surface-mount technology (SMT) and multi-layer PWB layout techniques.
- Familiarity with PWB fabrication methods and manufacturing processes.
- Experience using electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, DVMs, power supplies, and signal generators.
- Ability to perform tolerance analyses using CAD tools and standard inspection methods.
- Working knowledge of GD&T principles in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Understanding of medical device quality systems and regulations, including FDA 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, and ISO 9001.
- Ability to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to work with hand tools during prototype assembly and testing activities.
- Ability to remain seated for extended periods while performing computer-based work or attending meetings.
What Will Make You Successful
- Experience designing products within regulated medical device environments.
- Knowledge of optical systems and advanced imaging technologies.
- Previous involvement in prototype development, tooling, and test fixture design.
- Experience supporting product verification, validation, and manufacturing transfer activities.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in managing changing priorities and project demands.
