Summary

The Senior Director of Engineering reports directly to the Vice President of Facilities for the MaineHealth system. This leader will oversee and direct all engineering operations and building maintenance activities for Maine Medical Center in Portland-MaineHealth's flagship Level One Trauma Center.

This role is responsible for leading a comprehensive engineering program that supports a complex, high-acuity healthcare environment where reliability, safety, and compliance are paramount. Core responsibilities include oversight of HVAC (highly preferred expertise), mechanical, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and grounds operations.

The Senior Director will develop and execute a strategic vision for Engineering that drives operational excellence, enhances patient and staff experience, ensures consistent and high-quality service delivery, and optimizes operating and energy costs.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead all engineering and facilities operations at MaineHealth's flagship Level One Trauma Center and assigned regional facilities

* Oversee engineering staffing, workforce planning, and team development

* Direct infrastructure maintenance programs to ensure system reliability and performance

* Ensure full compliance with all federal, state, and local healthcare regulatory requirements

* Manage energy consumption, sustainability efforts, and cost efficiency initiatives

* Oversee service contracts and vendor relationships

* Plan and execute capital infrastructure and facilities projects

* Partner across clinical and administrative teams to support safe, high-quality patient care environments

Scope of Role

* Manage the entire Maine Medical Center facility and serve as the point of contact in emergency situations

* Lead a team of approximately 50 staff including painters, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and other trades

* Oversee daily maintenance, emergency response, special projects, new construction, and renovation or repurposing of clinical spaces

* Address complex HVAC challenges across a mix of legacy and modern infrastructure, including specialized environments such as labs and operating rooms

* Direct leadership team including Compliance Manager, Facilities Manager, two Maintenance Managers, and Building Control Specialist

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or related field preferred

License/Certifications (Preferred): CHFM, Professional Engineer (PE), LEED Accreditation or similar

Experience:

* 10+ years in healthcare facilities, engineering, or skilled trades leadership

* Strong preference for healthcare or hospital environment experience

* Experience supporting accreditation surveys and regulatory site visits

* Demonstrated experience managing HVAC systems and infrastructure challenges in complex facilities

Additional Skills:

* Strong financial and operational acumen

* Knowledge of healthcare codes and regulatory requirements

* Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) preferred

* Ability to communicate effectively with both technical frontline staff and executive leadership

* Must be on-site regularly and live within the region for emergency response
