Sr. Quality Assurance Specialist - Metallurgical Laboratory
Summary

The Quality Assurance Specialist supports the BELAC/CCTC Metallurgical Laboratory by maintaining compliance with laboratory quality management systems, accreditation requirements, customer specifications, and applicable industry standards. This position provides technical support for laboratory testing and metallurgical evaluations, assists in maintaining laboratory quality processes, and drives continuous improvement initiatives. The role works closely with laboratory personnel to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and consistency of test results, documentation, and laboratory operations.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Job duties may include, but are not limited to, the responsibilities listed below. Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed to support laboratory operations, accreditation requirements, continuous improvement initiatives, and business objectives.



  • Maintain compliance with laboratory quality management systems, customer requirements, and applicable industry standards.
  • Support the administration and continuous improvement of laboratory quality systems, including ISO/IEC 17025, AS9100, and other applicable accreditation requirements.
  • Develop, review, and maintain laboratory procedures, work instructions, forms, and quality records.
  • Perform quality reviews of laboratory data, technical reports, test records, and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Coordinate and support internal audits, external audits, accreditation assessments, and customer audits.
  • Investigate nonconformances, corrective actions, and customer concerns; conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor laboratory quality metrics and identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Support proficiency testing, measurement system evaluations, and laboratory quality assurance activities.
  • Perform and review metallographic evaluations and materials characterization activities in accordance with approved procedures and customer specifications.
  • Analyze laboratory data and prepare technical reports summarizing metallurgical findings and conclusions.
  • Assist with method validation, test method development, and laboratory process improvements.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment calibration, maintenance, and recordkeeping activities meet quality system requirements.
  • Collaborate with laboratory personnel to improve testing efficiency, data integrity, and overall laboratory performance.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory effectiveness, quality, and customer satisfaction.
  • Support training activities related to laboratory quality systems, testing procedures, and accreditation requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Engineering, Quality Assurance, or a related scientific discipline preferred.
  • Laboratory, materials testing, metallurgical, or quality assurance experience preferred.
  • Experience working within an ISO/IEC 17025, AS9100, or equivalent quality management system preferred.
  • Auditing experience preferred.
  • Lean Six Sigma or continuous improvement experience preferred.
  • Experience with metallography, microscopy, materials characterization, or laboratory testing preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered.

This position may require work hours outside of the regularly scheduled hours to meet operational needs. This may include work during evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Additional work hours are assigned based on business requirements. Non-exempt employees will be paid overtime in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.


The salary range for this position reflects a broad spectrum of experience levels. Individual compensation within the range is determined by multiple factors, including relevant experience, education, certifications, job related skills, internal equity, and market conditions. We evaluate each candidate individually to ensure fair and competitive pay decisions.
