What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineering Manager to create, develop, and take on responsibility for state-of-the-art Electrode manufacturing processes in one of the most complex and challenging manufacturing environments - Tesla's Texas Gigafactory.

The Tesla Cell Electrode Manufacturing Engineering Team is at the forefront of cell technology driving the critical development and scaling of new battery manufacturing processes and chemistry across multiple platforms. It is an opportunity to work alongside and lead a cross-functional team in developing novel manufacturing equipment, scaling the dry battery electrode process throughout the manufacturing line lifecycle demonstrating industry leading throughput and yield.

This leadership role will be pivotal in establishing electrode manufacturing roadmap for current and future factories in close collaboration with leaders from across the broader Cell organization including: Equipment Design, Process Engineering, Product Excellence (Quality), Production and Operations, and New Product Introduction (NPI). The team will be responsible for taking new manufacturing designs and manufacturing processes from initial concept through prototype development and into high volume ramp/production. As such, we expect this person to take pride in their hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail.

What You'll Do
  • Drive development of electrode manufacturing equipment from concept through installation, commissioning, and production ramp guiding the engineering resources on the team
  • Identify continuous improvement for capability improvement and manufacturing cost reductions in the form of availability, reliability and yield improvements, as well as Capex and BOM cost optimization
  • Collaborate with production engineering and controls teams in accelerating performance improvement and process automation
  • Setup manufacturing systems to streamline new equipment installation, commissioning, and enable manufacturing readiness on accelerated schedule
  • Maintain detailed component level process documentation, findings, and process manufacturing line development
  • Proactive risk mitigation incorporating DFMEA and PFMEA Documentation
  • Coordinate site readiness activities with Tesla factory design and construction teams
  • Lead power-on and commissioning activities of new production lines
  • Execute production automation equipment validation testing
  • Ramp production lines exceeding target yield / uptime to achieve aggressive launch schedules

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years of manufacturing engineering experience with accompanying 5+ years of engineering leadership experience
  • Proficiency in mechanical assembly and new equipment development (tolerance analysis, actuator selection, cell manufacturing - calendaring, slitting, coating)
  • High impact problem solver with demonstrated experience in data driven root cause analysis, failure analysis, and predictive modeling
  • Track record of success in establishing high throughput, highly automated, precision manufacturing lines complete with motion control, PLC programming, and HMI design
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes from concept to high volume production environment
  • Team enabler demonstrating technical expertise, mentorship, and proven track record of people management and productivity enhancement
  • Poise and composure working under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
