Job Description

The Mammography Tech - Non-Registered performs diagnostic radiographic procedures through the application of ionizing radiation to produce quality images under a variety of conditions. While completing an approved mammography cross-training program, the technologist develops the knowledge and clinical competencies needed to perform mammographic examinations safely and accurately under appropriate supervision.

Job Relationships

Reports to the Diagnostic Imaging Operations Manager.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Participate in the assigned mammography cross-training program, including didactic instruction, supervised clinical experience, documentation, and competency validation.

  • Perform mammographic examinations within documented training and competency levels under appropriate supervision.

  • Produce quality mammographic images and perform special views following training and competency validation.

  • Verify patient identification, examination orders, clinical history, pregnancy status when applicable, and prior or comparison examinations.

  • Explain procedures, accurately position patients, and provide safe, respectful, and compassionate patient care.

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of breast anatomy, positioning techniques, compression methods, image evaluation, and mammography protocols.

  • Prepare examinations for radiologist interpretation and ensure proper image transfer through PACS to designated workstations.

  • Maintain accurate patient, procedure, training, competency, and examination documentation, including required mammography logs.

  • Assist with obtaining prior imaging studies, recall patients for additional imaging as directed, and schedule diagnostic breast examinations and biopsies.

  • Perform quality assurance and quality control testing on mammography equipment in accordance with departmental requirements.

  • Review mammography reports for accuracy, coordinate necessary corrections, generate BI-RADS patient letters, and prepare biopsy-related images and media.

  • Support departmental operations through flexibility in scheduling, staffing needs, and adherence to established workflows and standards.

  • Demonstrate professional behavior with patients, providers, and employees while contributing to department goals.

  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.

  • Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.

  • Provide excellent customer service and adhere to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.

  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • Must be a graduate of an approved A.C.R. school.

  • Acceptance into and successful completion of the department's mammography cross-training program.

  • Ability to complete required mammography education, supervised clinical experience, examination documentation, and competency assessments within the timeframe established by the department.

Licenses/Certificates

  • Must have current licensure with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

  • CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines required within 30 days of hire.

  • Must be registered and in good standing in the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiography.

  • Successful completion of a Mammography Tech program and obtain registration in ARRT-Mammography is expected within two years of hire.

  • Maintain all required continuing education and credentialing requirements.

  • Must be able to work with arms above head.

  • Must be able to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to assist patient to and from mammography unit.

Working Environment

  • Standing, walking and lifting required.

  • HIPAA2: Tasks that do not require unlimited access but normal course of employment or special conditions may require unplanned and unsupervised access to Protected Health Information.
