Job Summary
Under supervision of carpenter shop supervisor, apply basic knowledge and expertise to perform preventive maintenance required to insure proper operation of all roofing systems. Make any necessary minor repairs to campus and residential roofs with a career path directed toward Journey person level Roofer.
Essential Job Duties
In coordination and cooperation with other trades and shops, perform various roofing duties that include but are not limited to the following:
- Assisting carpenters with framing, drywall, cabinetry, doors, windows, and finish carpentry.
- Measuring, cutting, and preparing materials under the direction of a carpenter.
- Loading, unloading, and transporting tools, equipment, and building materials.
- Holding materials in place and helping with installations.
- Removing debris and disposing of construction waste.
- Assisting with demolition and site preparation.
- Setting up ladders, scaffolding, and work areas.
- Performing basic repairs and routine maintenance tasks.
- Operating and maintaining hand tools and power tools safely.
- Comply with all safety regulations and procedures and wear required protective equipment (PPE).
- Responsible for cleaning and organizing job sites and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
- Properly expedite specified repair work assigned by the supervisor. Assist in inspecting and maintaining all facility roofs.
- Work closely with all shop personal and other Facilities Management staff.
- Conduct oneself in a manner that is courteous, cooperative, and attentive, and maintain effective professional relationships.
- Respond to trouble calls, emergency conditions and analyze routine work requests for timely execution and completion.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of related work experience.
- Must have basic carpentry skills.
- Must have basic mechanical skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbally.
- Demonstrated knowledge of general power tools.
- Must provide necessary hand tools, a list of required tools is available upon request.
- Must maintain a valid California driver's license throughout the course of employment.
- Must be able to adhere to the Institute's driving policy.
- Must be able to stoop, bend, pull, and kneel throughout the workday, and stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs on a consistent basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 year of work experience in a university or campus facilities setting is a plus.
- Certificate of completion or formal training in the carpenter or roofing field.
- Proficiency with automated work order system and timekeeping application is a plus.

Hiring Range
$24.50 - $30.00 Per Hour
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
