Software Developer II (Mid-level, Full-stack)

Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) is seeking a talented Software Developer II to design, develop, and maintain modern full-stack web applications that integrate with relational and cloud-based data sources. In this role, you will support mission-critical systems for the NASA Ocean Biology Distributed Active Archive Center (OB.DAAC), which archives, manages, and distributes satellite and in-situ data used for Earth science research, climate studies, and environmental monitoring. You will contribute to applications that support scientific data access, processing, and analysis. The ideal candidate has experience building scalable web applications, developing APIs, working with databases, and deploying applications in cloud environments, with an interest in supporting scientific research and government missions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain full-stack web applications.
  • Build responsive user interfaces and robust backend services.
  • Develop applications that retrieve, process, and present data from relational and cloud-hosted databases.
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs and other service integrations.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, system architects, and other developers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to software quality, security, and performance improvements.
  • Troubleshoot application issues and implement enhancements.
  • Support application deployment, monitoring, and maintenance within cloud environments.
  • Follow software development best practices, including version control, testing, and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's (B.S.) degree and 5 years' experience in software engineering or development, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience developing full-stack web applications.
  • Strong experience working with relational databases and writing efficient SQL queries.
  • Experience building applications that consume and expose REST APIs.
  • Proficiency in one or more modern backend programming languages such as Java, C#, Python, or Node.js.
  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.
  • Familiarity with Git and collaborative software development practices.
  • Understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design, and secure coding principles.

Desired Qualifications

  • Degree specifically in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Experience developing and deploying applications in Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • AWS certifications such as AWS Certified Developer - Associate, AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate, or similar.
  • Demonstrated AWS experience through professional projects, open-source contributions, or personal portfolio work.
  • Experience with cloud-native services including Lambda, API Gateway, ECS, EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, or CloudFormation.
  • Experience working within large enterprise environments with mature software development practices.
  • Previous experience supporting NASA programs, federal government contracts, aerospace organizations, or other mission-critical environments.
  • Experience with DevOps tools and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.

Note: The actual salary offered will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, tenure, skill set, availability of qualified candidates, geographic location, certifications, and other job-related criteria deemed relevant to the position.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
