Unit Overview - Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)

The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) is a 28-bed, high-acuity cardiovascular recovery and intensive care unit. This fast-paced environment combines advanced technology, evidence-based practice, and critical thinking to deliver exceptional patient and family-centered care.


Specialty Areas Include:

  • Pre-operative support and immediate post-operative recovery for cardiovascular procedures
  • Open-heart surgery recovery
  • Heart transplant care
  • Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) implantation and management
  • Interventional and structural heart procedures
  • Acute cardiology and advanced heart failure management


Advanced Patient Care Experience:

CVICU nurses care for critically ill patients requiring:



  • Inotropic support
  • Temporary left and right ventricular assist devices
  • Impella devices
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABP)
  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
  • CentriMag (C-Mag) support systems
  • Total Artificial Heart technology (future implementation)


Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Management of invasive monitoring lines and hemodynamic support
  • Administration and titration of complex medication therapies
  • Continuous renal replacement therapies, including dialysis and ultrafiltration
  • Care and management of temporary and permanent ventricular assist devices
  • Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes and safety


Patient safety and quality outcomes remain the highest priorities, supported by strong nursing leadership and a collaborative multidisciplinary team.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge, clinical abilities, and technical skills necessary to provide age-specific and culturally competent patient care and education.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, colleagues, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Utilizes appropriate communication channels and maintains strict patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains clinical competency and demonstrates a commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing education.
  • Adapts effectively to change and works successfully within a culturally diverse environment.

Education
Required

  • Diploma in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.


Preferred

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).


Licensure & Certifications
Required

  • Current Ohio Registered Nurse (RN) License or Compact State RN License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
