Data Reporter

Bloomberg Industry Group
parental leave
United States, Virginia, Arlington
Aug 07, 2026
Ambitious. Creative. Attention to detail. If thatdescribes you, keep reading. Bloomberg Industry Group, one of Washington's busiest newsrooms, seeks a Data Reporter to help us write and visualize stories with impact.

This is your opportunity to join an innovative team dedicated to deep reporting and compelling investigative journalism.

We tell stories by digging into Bloomberg's extensive data sources, from legal data dives to investigative reporting on the news of the day.

The key skills we are looking for in this position: deep understanding of how to take raw data and find the story, then explain what you've found to fellow reporters, editors and ultimately readers. You know data is the start of the story, not the story itself. Proficiency in R or Python is required. This is a highly collaborative position, and you'll be expected to work well with our creative team as well as reporters and editors across the newsroom.

What you will do:

  • Search for, acquire and analyze data in pursuit of breaking and longer-term stories, with an eye for disruptions in the legal, financial, and government arenas.

  • Challenge yourself and others, exploring new technologies and finding new methods for storytelling to produce investigative stories with impact.

You need to have:

  • Excellent writing and reporting skills, with the ability to make data-driven stories accessible and understandable.

  • A demonstrated understanding of statistics and statistical analysis.

  • Knowledge of federal and state legislative, regulatory, and judicial processes.

  • Experience requesting, cleaning, and analyzing multiple government or private datasets.

  • Familiarity with at least one programming language such as Python or R. Strong visualization skills and knowledge of JavaScript, including libraries such as D3 and Svelte.

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in journalism or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in journalism, preferably with experience in writing and reporting on federal legislative and/or regulatory issues.

Compensation Range:

$90,000.00-$115,000.00

Placement in the salary range will be decided upon completion of the interview process. Salary determination will be determined based on factors including but not limited to relevant experience, demonstrated skills related to the requirements of the role, education, certifications, and geographic location.
