Position Summary

The Fitness Coordinator will provide oversight of fitness floor, help create, evaluate, teach, and run programs, classes, and personal training, including class data entry, marketing & post-program evaluations. This Fitness Coordinator will supervise personal trainers and fitness coaches, including hiring, training, payroll and evaluations. The Fitness Coordinator will ensure all equipment periodic preventative maintenance is conducted.

Essential Functions



  • Responsible for the oversight of fitness floor for safety and cleanliness and maintaining equipment.
  • Ensure Equipment is well maintained and performs routine preventive maintenance, including rectifying and reporting concerns in a timely manner.
  • Supervise fitness related staff and assist in their scheduling.
  • Work collaboratively with other Directors, Managers, and Coordinators to serve as a Manager on Duty.
  • Critique and give feedback to staff regarding their work and performance level.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions is needed and ability to ensure compliance and adherence by all, and reporting to necessary supervisors for any safety concerns.
  • Establish and maintain a Personal Training program, including the recruitment of trainers, a system for new client registration and assignment to trainers and check-in procedure for training sessions.
  • Support Guest Services, Fitness Coaches, and Personal Trainers, ensuring coverage of programs, including break times, etc.
  • Generate legible and accurate accident and incident reports as required and immediately rectify or notify appropriate personnel of all accidents to potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Follow and adhere to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  • Provide a safe, fun, and enjoyable learning environment for all participants.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and attitude with children, patrons, customers, staff and upper management.
  • Maintain open communication with direct supervisors about scheduling and coaching.
  • Be on time and prepared to teach/train.
  • Help facilitate equity and fairness among all participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach with hands and arms on a continuous basis. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must have the ability to operate telephone, a desktop or laptop computer, as well as the ability to access and produce information from a computer, and to understand written information.

Minimum Qualifications



  • At least 21-year-old.
  • S. in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, related field; or minimum of 1 year experience as a Certified Training/ working in the Fitness Industry.
  • Must possess and maintain current certificates in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Personal Training by a nationally recognized certifying body.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in developing, planning, managing, and supervising Fitness programs/facilities; training clients.
  • Must possess or obtain within six months ACE, NASM, AFFA, ISSA, or equivalent certification in Personal Training.
  • Must maintain a valid California Driver's License.
  • Must successfully complete Decision Driving Safety Test before driving for The Salvation Army and annually recertify as required.
  • Must meet certification by and participation in The Salvation Army's Fleet Safety Program (Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy dictates that an employee may not obtain more than two [2] moving violations or accidents within any 12-month period; see The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy).

  • General understanding of the health benefits of exercise.
  • Meet all health and safety regulations as defined by the Health Department as well as the Salvation Army.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of the gymnasium and athletic programs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all client information.
  • Maintain a drug and alcohol-free environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clientele and staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to relate positively and energetically with staff, clients, members, and customers.
  • Must have the ability to maintain a nonjudgmental attitude in working with customers, clients, members and staff.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and thrive in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
