Description

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse acts as a link in the continuity of patient care and clinical research for the Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. This individual functions as an APRN who participates as a member of Maternal Fetal-Medicine with faculty, residents, and students in the management of obstetrical patients. The individual is involved in the education of other nurses, patients, family members, residents, medical students, and the community at large. The APRN is also involved in the conduct of clinical research protocols.


Examples of Duties

I. Clinical Activities 70%
A Provides high quality medical care including initial and follow-up care in the MFM Prenatal Clinic.
B.Maintains list of all active patients in MFM Prenatal Clinic, including problems and plans of care.
C.Works in collaboration with nursing staff to triage outpatient referrals as they become available and appropriately schedule the patient's appointment depending on medical condition.
D.Obtains accurate patient history and pertinent health information regarding previous and ongoing state of health through advanced nursing assessment.
E.Provides initial and follow-up consultations with ultrasound interpretation by physician
F.Performs/orders diagnostic studies based on assessment findings and national guidelines.
G.Analyzes and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic testing results.
H.Acts as a liaison between referring providers, faculty, residents, and patients/family members, answering routine questions and concerns.
I.Attends perinatal meetings as necessary, including weekly MFM-NICU reviews.
J.Formulates a health plan emphasizing the responsibility and participation of the patient and family and other health team members.
K.Acts as a liaison with referring physician offices to assist in the timely scheduling of referrals and to notify them of changes in patient status.
L.Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment in accordance with Nursing Practice Act.
M.Provides advanced counseling and education to patients and families.
N.Triages patient phone calls and determines urgency for evaluation.
O. Provides well-woman care in general obstetrics/gynecology clinic setting
P.Serves as a preceptor and education resource for APRN and PA students.
Q.Provide education and guidance to SIU medical students and residents as needed.
R.Assist staff with daily procedures, as needed, including non-stress tests, amniocentesis, venipuncture, etc.
S.Other duties, as assigned.

II. Administration 20%
A.Directly supervises the daily activities of the charge nurse, registered dietitian, and other staff as assigned.
B.Assists secretarial and clerical personnel in the performance of their duties, including medical coding and insurance questions.
C.In conjunction with the charge nurse and ultrasound manager, coordinates the daily operations of everyday clinical activities within the MFM division.
D.Training new clinical staff and preparing orientation training schedules.
E.In conjunction with the charge nurse, inventories and prepares orders for clinical and laboratory supplies.
F.Assist with and reviews weekly clinical staff schedules and assists with monthly perinatal schedules.
G.Educates staff on clinical procedures and protocols.
H.Attends departmental and institutional meetings to keep current on standards of service and institutional guidelines and policies (OCP, ORS, Clinical Manager Meetings)
I.Oversees daily lab operations and works closely with HSHS St. John's Hospital, Memorial Medical Center, and Medspeed to provide lab services to MFM patients.
J.Serves as safety officer/ contact within the department.
K.Assists billing/ coding staff with accuracy and completion of billing.

III. Education 5%
A. Develops and coordinates patient teaching guides for high-risk obstetrical conditions.
B.Maintains current knowledge of Maternal-Fetal Medicine by participating in conferences, seminars, and professional organizations.
C.Educates patients and families regarding the obstetrical condition, potential treatment-related complications, and side-effect management.
D.Assists in teaching obstetrics clinical care skills to residents and students.
E.Assists in continuing education efforts and mentoring of clinical staff.

IV. Research 5%
A. Works in conjunction with cooperative group data managers to coordinate the implementation of clinical protocols and to provide patient information, as needed.
B. Assists faculty in Maternal-Fetal Medicine with research as they act as investigators for clinical trials.
C. Assists the outpatient nursing staff in implementing special requirements of research protocols
