Position Overview




Essential Job Duties
The McKinney-Aguirre Lab uses in translational large animal models to study epithelial recovery following clinically-relevant epithelial injury - with a special interest in the role of the microenvironment driving intestinal regeneration. The Lab is housed in the College of Veterinary Medicine and is part of Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The postdoctoral research fellow will participate in the management, processing, and analysis of studies employing a novel ex vivo intestinal perfusion models of intestinal injury.
  • The fellow will also optimize new assays for evaluating intestinal response to injury and recovery including the application of ELISAs and advanced sequencing.
  • This postdoctoral research fellow will interact regularly with scientists from various research backgrounds including experimental biologists. The successful candidate will be initiative-taking and enjoy working in a collaborative research environment.
  • The postdoctoral research fellow will complete experiments, author primary research articles, and attend scientific meetings to present research progress.

Other Work/Responsibilities
The research fellow will assist with the generation of research hypotheses. It is anticipated that the candidate will contribute preliminary data to research proposals and serve as a co-investigator and/or key personnel.

Requirements and Preferences






Work Schedule 8am-5pm, 5 days per week (flexible depending on business needs)
Department Required Skills

  • Experienced in intestinal stem cell culture.
  • Experienced in statistical analysis (Prism, R).
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Good understanding of general biology and willingness to learn basic immunology.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education


  • Advanced Academic Foundation: Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Comparative Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related biomedical field.

  • Core Biological Expertise: Strong foundational knowledge of intestinal anatomy and epithelial cell biology.

  • Bioinformatics Skill Set: Proven hands-on experience processing and analyzing high-throughput sequencing data.

  • Publication Track Record: Demonstrated scientific impact through first-author, peer-reviewed publications in epithelial biology or host-microbiome interactions.

  • Multi-Omics Proficiency (Preferred): Specialized expertise in applying metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, or metagenomics to investigate complex mammalian-microbiome systems.
