Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Network Communications is part of the Information Technology Services Department at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The Department of Network Communications is responsible for the campus wide enterprise communications systems including the wired and wireless networks, communications servers and the voice network, the campus copper and fiber infrastructure and cable television services. Network Communications also assists in developing, designing and engineering long-range infrastructure plans for the University to support the campus community in its goals and objectives.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Network Technician addresses customers' needs and supports the day-to-day operation of the campus network. This position will assist in the setup and installation of network hardware and software such as switches, routers, and access points and will assist in upgrading existing network systems. This position will assist in the planning and maintenance of campus network cabling infrastructure and will have a direct hand in the installation of new network gear in construction projects. This position will also assist in resolving routine network problems and maintaining the documentation and inventory of the campus networks.
Other duties include:

  • Responsibility for ensuring current configuration documentation (e.g., baseline, backup, etc.) exists for all critical systems.
  • Assisting the Network team in the patching and vulnerability remediation of network systems in a timely manner and according to documented standards and best practices.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Associates degree in Electronics, Networking Technology or a closely related degree, or graduation from high school and two years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred education, professional skills and experience

  • Two years of experience in a network-related field.
  • Fundamental understanding of LAN architecture and experience troubleshooting physical, data link, and network-layer issues, including cable testing, patch panel termination, VLANs, port configuration, IP addressing, etc.
  • Hands-on experience installing, mounting, cabling, and maintaining inventory for network hardware, and documenting network configurations, diagrams, and baseline system settings.
  • Knowledge of network vulnerability remediation and basic security best practices (system logging, and monitoring).
  • Basic understanding of or exposure to updating network switch firmware/operating systems; Cisco technologies.
  • Ability to identify and recommend technical solutions that enhance network availability and performance.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks or small projects concurrently in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
