Iron / Rigging Superintendent

Play an integral role in leading the safe, productive, and efficient execution of ironwork and rigging activities on major industrial construction projects. As an Iron / Rigging Superintendent, you will provide field leadership for large craft organizations, ensuring critical erection, structural steel, rigging, lifting, equipment setting, and heavy construction activities are executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project quality requirements.

This is a field-based leadership role located on an active industrial construction site. The successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working directly with forepersons, craft professionals, construction managers, contractors, and project leadership teams to coordinate daily construction activities and drive field execution. Success in this role requires a strong field presence, exceptional leadership skills, sound construction judgment, and a commitment to safe and predictable project delivery.

This highly visible construction leadership position serves as a key member of the site construction management team. Your ability to lead large craft organizations, coordinate workface execution, manage productivity, and support workforce development will directly impact project performance, safety results, labor efficiency, schedule achievement, and customer satisfaction.

Purpose of the role

The Iron / Rigging Superintendent is responsible for directing and coordinating ironwork and rigging construction activities on major industrial projects. You will provide leadership to a large group of forepersons and craft professionals while ensuring safe work execution, workforce productivity, quality performance, apprentice development, and compliance with project requirements.

Working closely with Construction Managers, Project Managers, Field Engineers, Workface Planners, HSE professionals, Quality teams, and subcontractors, you will ensure construction activities are properly planned, staffed, and executed to support project objectives. Through effective workforce planning, field leadership, and operational oversight, you will help deliver successful project outcomes while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

You will be responsible for

• Leading all ironwork and rigging construction activities within assigned project areas.
• Directing and coordinating large crews of forepersons and craft personnel in support of project execution.
• Supporting safe execution of structural steel erection, equipment setting, heavy lifts, rigging operations, and related construction activities.
• Planning work activities and allocating workforce resources to maintain productivity and schedule performance.
• Coordinating workface planning activities to ensure labor, equipment, materials, drawings, and permits are available when required.
• Monitoring manpower requirements and adjusting workforce deployment to support changing project priorities.
• Overseeing daily construction operations to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved plans and procedures.
• Driving workforce productivity through effective field leadership, planning, scheduling, and coordination.
• Ensuring compliance with project HSE requirements, lifting and rigging standards, and company policies.
• Conducting field inspections, safety observations, and worksite reviews to identify and mitigate risks.
• Supporting apprentice development, workforce training, and craft competency improvement initiatives.
• Monitoring quality performance and ensuring work is executed in accordance with project specifications and quality requirements.
• Coordinating with Engineering, Quality, HSE, Planning, Materials Management, and Construction leadership teams.
• Resolving field execution challenges and supporting timely issue resolution.
• Managing labor performance, work progress, production reporting, and crew efficiency metrics.
• Supporting cost management initiatives through effective labor utilization and productivity improvements.
• Monitoring contractor and subcontractor performance and ensuring alignment with project objectives.
• Participating in construction planning meetings, execution reviews, risk assessments, and progress evaluations.
• Supporting schedule recovery plans and execution improvement initiatives when required.
• Promoting a culture of teamwork, accountability, craftsmanship, safety leadership, and operational excellence.

What you'll bring to the role

You bring extensive field construction experience, strong trade leadership capability, and a proven ability to safely execute complex ironwork and rigging activities within industrial construction environments.

• Typically 12+ years of construction experience within ironwork, rigging, heavy industrial construction, plant erection, structural steel, equipment installation, or related disciplines.
• Journey-level certification or equivalent trade qualification where applicable.
• Demonstrated experience leading large craft organizations on industrial, oil and gas, power, chemicals, mining, manufacturing, infrastructure, or EPC construction projects.
• Strong understanding of rigging practices, lifting operations, crane coordination, structural steel erection, and equipment installation activities.
• Proven ability to lead multiple forepersons and large craft workforces in complex industrial construction environments.
• Extensive knowledge of construction sequencing, workface planning, labor productivity, and workforce management.
• Strong understanding of project schedules, execution strategies, and construction planning processes.
• Experience monitoring manpower, productivity, cost performance, and construction progress.
• Knowledge of applicable safety regulations, lifting standards, rigging requirements, and safe work practices.
• Strong understanding of labor relations principles and workforce management practices.
• Demonstrated ability to identify risks, solve construction challenges, and implement practical field solutions.
• Experience supporting apprentice training, craft development, and workforce mentoring initiatives.
• Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to influence field personnel and construction leadership teams.
• Experience working collaboratively with Project Management, Construction Management, Engineering, Quality, HSE, and contractor organizations.
• Ability to recognize and resolve conflict while fostering a positive and productive work environment.
• Advanced understanding of construction systems, processes, tools, and field execution methodologies.
