The incumbent may be assigned by the Director of Public Works to serve as DPW Director in his absence. |

- Under general direction of the Director of Public Works, plans, coordinates and directs the various activities of the Engineering Division.
- Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff, processes employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, establishing employees' goals and completing employee performance appraisals; maintains standards through the effective coordination of activities; allocates personnel; provides recommendations and approval in the areas of new employee selection, transfers, promotions, and salary administration; develops training programs.
- Supervises the preparation of and evaluates design plans, specifications and contract documents of public works projects by staff and engineering consultants under contract.
- Reviews and approves engineering and development plans submitted by private land developers, subdividers and contractors.
- Prepares budgets for the operation of the Engineering Division;
- Assists the Director in the development and implementation of the annual and extended Community Investment Program.
- Audits contracts and expenditures to maintain budgets.
- Performs technical research; prepares engineering reports and recommendations, and presents information to the Board of Public Works, various committees, the Common Council and the public related to engineering projects.
- Prepares agendas and reviews minutes for the Board of Public Works and attends all meetings which are held 2 times each month and fills in for the Director at Common Council meetings as needed.
- Utilizes updates in technology to perform tasks, including software such as Kronos (payroll), Munis (financial), Granicus (agendas and minutes), Excel & Word (report writing and presentation).
- Assists Director with creation and implementation of the department's strategic goals and long-range infrastructure improvement plans.
- Develops relationships with other departments and organizations (DOT, DNR, Waukesha County, etc.), in order to promote Engineering projects, funding opportunities and overall cooperation.
- Responds to inquiries from the general public.

Requirements of Work |
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Civil Engineering and additional Professional Engineer training, and at least 10 years of experience as an engineer preparing design plans and/or construction management of public works projects. The design and construction management experience must be in the areas of streets design & construction, sanitary sewer and/or storm sewer design and/or construction management |
Knowledge of |
- Principles and practices, regulations and laws of Civil Engineering.
- Economics and accounting principles.
- Office and field work related to the preparation of plans, charts, reports and construction of roadway, storm sewer and sanitary sewer engineering projects.
- Construction and maintenance laws, codes, department rules, regulations and policies.
- The principles and practices of administrative management in the public sector.
- The use of standard office equipment, including computers and relevant software programs.

- Direct and supervise employees and their activities in a coordinated manner.
- Prepare and interpret complex drawings, plans, graphs, charts, maps and specifications.
- Read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
