Primary Purpose
The purpose of the Office of Internal Audits is to strengthen the ability of Appalachian State University (University) to create, protect, and sustain value by providing the Board of Trustees and management with independent, risk-based, and objective assurance, advice, insight, and foresight.
Minimum Qualifications
As per General Statute: 143-746 (c ) Appointment and Qualifications of Internal Auditors. - Any State employee who performs the internal audit function shall meet the minimum qualifications for internal auditors established by the Office of State Human Resources, in consultation with the Council of Internal Auditing.
Bachelor's degree in accounting or a discipline related to a program area within the agency, and two years of audit experience; OR a Bachelor's degree in any field and certification/licensure as a certified internal auditor, certified fraud examiner, certified information system auditor, certified public accountant with an audit focus, or other audit certification/license and two years of audit experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
License/Certification Required
Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in advanced-level Excel
  • Knowledge in MS Office Suite and Google Workspace
  • Knowledge of data analytics skills and related software (Tableau, Power BI, or similar)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Internal Auditor II position is responsible for conducting professional auditing assignments in accordance with the Institute of Internal Auditors and departmental methodologies, as assigned by the CAO within a Tier-based structure.
This position will be responsible primarily for Tier I & II audits, which are repeatable, focused assurance and advisory audits of institutional risk, governance, and control processes.
Types of audits performed could include financial, internal controls, compliance, performance, and follow-up audits.
The scope of the position's contact and responsibility extends to all University-related functions. This position requires professional knowledge and skills in the auditing field.

Physical Demands of Position
The work is typically performed at a desk. However, the person in this position may be required at times to lift boxes or files in order to review documentation. May include cross-campus walking at times.
