Position Summary
The Quality Inspector is responsible for performing in-process, and final inspections of fabricated and machined components to verify compliance with drawings, specifications, purchase order requirements, and internal quality standards.
This position primarily supports fabrication operations, with additional inspection responsibilities in a light machine shop environment. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working on the shop floor, reading fabrication and mechanical drawings, using common inspection equipment, and documenting inspection results.
Candidates must be able to use standard measuring instruments, including tape measures, calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring tools appropriate to the inspection being performed. A basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is a plus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform in-process, and final inspections of fabricated assemblies, components, and machined parts.
- Inspect parts and assemblies against engineering drawings, customer specifications, purchase order requirements, work instructions, and shop documentation.
- Verify dimensional requirements using appropriate inspection equipment.
- Use standard precision measuring equipment including digital and dial calipers, outside micrometers, depth measuring equipment, height gauges as applicable, squares, levels, and other general fabrication inspection tools.
- Perform dimensional inspection of light machine shop components using calipers, micrometers, and other appropriate measuring devices.
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, mechanical drawings, tolerances, notes, and specifications.
- Apply a basic working knowledge of GD&T when inspecting machined components.
- Verify features such as overall dimensions, hole locations, diameters, thicknesses, lengths, and other specified characteristics.
- Perform visual inspections for workmanship and obvious defects.
- Verify required inspection documentation is complete and accurate and maintain inspection records in accordance with company procedures.
- Identify, document, and help control nonconforming material or workmanship until dispositioned.
- Clearly communicate inspection findings to Quality, Production, Engineering, and supervision.
- Verify measuring and inspection equipment is within its required calibration period prior to use.
- Assist with first-piece and first article inspections when required.
- Support customer, internal, and third-party inspections or audits as needed.
- Work collaboratively with production personnel to identify and resolve quality issues while maintaining inspection independence.
- Maintain an organized and professional inspection area and perform other quality-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous quality inspection experience in a fabrication, manufacturing, machining, or similar industrial environment preferred.
- Ability to use standard measuring instruments, including tape measures, calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring tools.
- Experience using calipers and micrometers.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication and mechanical drawings.
- Ability to accurately document inspection results.
- Basic computer skills and ability to use electronic inspection records or quality systems.
- Strong attention to detail and good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with manufacturing personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience inspecting welded or fabricated assemblies.
- Experience inspecting machined components.
- Familiarity with structural steel or miscellaneous metal fabrication.
- Experience with height gauges, surface plates, pin gauges, or similar inspection equipment.
- Familiarity with weld symbols and welding documentation.
- Experience working within an ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality management system.
- Experience with First Article Inspection (FAI) or other documented dimensional inspection processes.
- Formal GD&T training is a plus but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a fabrication and machine shop environment and stand or walk for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach as necessary to inspect assemblies.
- Ability to safely lift and handle inspection equipment and parts within reasonable weight limits.
- Ability to use ladders or platforms when necessary to inspect larger fabricated assemblies.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection, and other PPE as required.
Work Environment
This position will work primarily in active fabrication and machine shop environments and may be exposed to noise, welding operations, machining operations, material handling equipment, temperature variations, and other typical manufacturing conditions.
The Quality Inspector is expected to follow all company safety requirements and maintain professional working relationships with operations personnel while preserving the independence and integrity of the Quality function.
