Job Summary

The Division of Continuing Education invites applications for an Online Application Security Professional! The University of Colorado Boulder offers a variety of online programs in different academic fields and multiple formats (i.e. term-based, self-paced, scaled online learning, etc.) to accommodate various student needs with respect to scheduling, budget, and professional goals. The Online Application Security Professional is charged with ensuring an efficient and secure pathway for admission and enrollment into these programs.

Specifically, the position helps to maintain the integrity of the admissions and enrollment processes for online degrees by conducting identity verification, supporting export control compliance, and ensuring adherence to institutional, state, and federal regulations. This position plays an important role in protecting university systems and student data, validating applicant identities, mitigating fraud attempts, and supporting secure access to services for domestic and international applicants.

The position is also responsible for responding to applicant inquiries and troubleshooting student issues that arise during the application process. The incumbent must exercise good judgment, maintain strict confidentiality, and apply established policies and procedures consistently while communicating with applicants, faculty, staff, and external partners. They will coordinate across teams that support these efforts within Continuing Education, the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs (VCAA) office, and other business units at CU Boulder and University Information System.

This position serves as an export control liaison by reporting operationally to Export Controls and functionally to Continuing Education.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

ID Verification and Application Security:

  • Establish and maintain secure operations for all online enrollments within CU, including staying up to date with standards across the industry and ensuring compliance with all federal regulations.
  • Maintain identity verification processes for applicants/enrollees using approved institutional procedures and technologies, and collaborate with additional team members in their efforts towards identity verification.
  • Review and authenticate Tier 1 government-issued identification from both U.S. and international applicants.
  • Review and authenticate Tier 2 (secondary) and Tier 3 (supplemental) documentation from both U.S. and international applicants, as needed.
  • Conduct identity verification interviews through secure video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, as needed.
  • Document campus review process for international applicants.
  • Apply established identity verification standards consistently, without bias, denying cases that do not meet requirements and advancing exceptions through appropriate channels.
  • Support export control compliance by following applicable federal regulations and institutional policies regarding access to university resources and technologies.
  • Track, review, and report data for application and enrollment trends to identify suspicious activity and discrepancies that might suggest fraud, and advance concerns as appropriate.
  • Manage documentation of identity verification activities while protecting sensitive personal and institutional data.

Applicant Support and Troubleshooting:

  • Connect with a diverse, global applicant population regarding identity verification requirements and outcomes, as well as general application questions that arise through the application process.
  • Serve as the primary responder to all emails that come through the general application email inbox.
  • Collaborate with Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, Campus Security, Information Technology, University Counsel, Export Controls, and other university partners to ensure secure and compliant admissions processes.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in compliance with FERPA and university information security standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support university security, compliance, and admissions operations.

This is a hybrid position, working a mix of days on campus and remotely each week.


What We Can Offer

The annual salary range for this position is $55,000-$62,000. Relocation assistance is available within department guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in higher education admissions, enrollment management, compliance, security, export control, or other governmental offices.

  • Ability to follow procedures without exception, making data informed decisions and advancing cases that fall outside established parameters.
  • Ability to exercise sound professional judgment when conducting identity verification, with an understanding of its importance in protecting institutional security and maintaining the integrity of the admissions process.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to connect with individuals from diverse cultural and international backgrounds.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to identify inconsistencies and resolve issues quickly and accurately.
  • Must respect confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Familiarity with Slate, Persona, Ping, Campus Solutions or comparable CRM and identity verification platforms.
  • Knowledge of university export control regulations and compliance practices.
  • Experience working with international applicants and cross-cultural communication.
  • Knowledge of common and emerging identity fraud techniques affecting higher education institutions, and experience identifying and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Experience conducting identity verification procedures for domestic and international populations to include experience inspecting and authenticating Tier 1, Tier 2 and/or Tier 3 forms of identification for both U.S. and international applicants.
  • Knowledge of the NIST Digital Identity Guidelines and their application to identity verification processes.
  • Experience conducting identity verification interviews through video conferencing technologies.
  • Experience with biometric identity verification, including real-time facial matching and AI-assisted fraud detection.
