Job Summary

The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2027. We seek candidates working in computational mathematics or physical applied mathematics (nonlinear waves, dynamical systems, applied partial differential equations) to sustain and grow the department's long-standing strengths in these areas. We are especially interested in candidates whose research connects to modern methods and applications, including machine learning/artificial intelligence and quantum science.
CU is an Equal Opportunity Employer and complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment. We are committed to creating a workplace where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity, and we encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply, including protected veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The Department of Applied Mathematics is home to a diverse and energetic faculty and staff. Our 21 tenured and tenure-track faculty work on areas that span computational mathematics, nonlinear mathematics including nonlinear dynamics and waves, mathematical biology, physical applied mathematics, probability, and statistics and data sciences. The Department sits at the crossroads of the university's two largest colleges, being rostered in the College of Arts and Sciences while teaching students in the College of Engineering. For more information see: Academics | Applied Mathematics | University of Colorado Boulder. This placement between the two colleges provides opportunities for faculty to easily build collaborations across a wide range of disciplines.
Our Computational Mathematics group is known for its contributions to the numerical analysis of partial differential equations, spectral methods, optimization, high performance computing, and fast algorithms, with applications spanning inverse problems, data assimilation, imaging and signal processing, and machine learning. Our Applied Nonlinear PDEs and Dynamics group has a strong tradition in wave phenomena, dynamical systems, partial differential equations, and network science, with applications spanning fluid dynamics, condensed matter, optics, and plasma physics, as well as social and physical networks. This search comes as the department looks to renew and extend these traditions.
Boulder has a rich quantum science and technology research community. Six decades of work at CU Boulder and JILA, the university's joint institute with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, have produced four Nobel laureates in physics, and the CUbit Quantum Initiative now coordinates quantum research, education, and industry engagement across campus and with neighboring federal laboratories. That research base anchors a regional industry of more than fifty quantum companies, the CU Boulder-led Colorado Quantum Incubator, and the federally designated Elevate Quantum Tech Hub. The campus is investing comparably in artificial intelligence and machine learning, hosting the NSF AI Institute for Student-AI Teaming and coordinating AI research, teaching, and infrastructure campuswide through the Artificial Intelligence Strategic Steering Committee. Applied mathematicians at CU Boulder are well positioned to draw on and contribute to both communities.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Faculty are expected to do research, teaching, and service according to a 40%, 40%, 20% split, respectively. The successful candidate will develop and conduct an independent, externally-fundable research program in computational mathematics or physical applied mathematics; contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, including courses such as numerical analysis, convex and non-convex optimization, theoretical machine learning, dynamical systems, nonlinear waves, partial differential equations, and asymptotic methods; and advise graduate students.

What You Should Know

We seek candidates who can make significant contributions to their scholarly discipline and who are strong teachers. This position requires a dedication to teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs and to developing and conducting an innovative independent research program. The department serves a large and varied student body across two colleges, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates.

What We Can Offer

$115,000 - $130,000: Candidates may expect starting salaries within the posted range depending upon accomplishments including publication record, external funding, and years of experience in a comparable faculty position within this field. Start up funding, a recruitment incentive, and a moving allowance may be available to the successful candidate per department guidelines.

Benefits

At the University of Colorado Boulder, we are committed to supporting the holistic health and well-being of our employees. Our comprehensive benefits package includes medical, dental, and retirement plans; generous paid time off; tuition assistance for you and your dependents; and an ECO Pass for local transit. As one of Boulder County's largest employers, CU Boulder offers an inspiring academic community and access to world-class outdoor recreation. In fact, CU Boulder has been named one of Forbes' America's Best Large Employers, ranking #4 among large employers in Colorado and #28 among universities nationwide. Explore additional perks and programs through the CU Advantage program.

What We Would Like You to Have

Postdoctoral research experience; teaching experience; and research that engages with or opens new applications for machine learning/artificial intelligence or quantum science.
