Landscape Services is responsible for campus grounds maintenance, including landscaping, planting, leaf removal, and snow removal. The department maintains outdoor spaces and walkways to support campus safety, accessibility, and daily operations throughout the year.

Job Description

  • Grounds Operations: Manages the daily operation and maintenance of University grounds to provide a safe, functional, clean, and visually appealing campus. Establishes work priorities; assigns personnel and equipment; coordinates routine, seasonal, and special projects; conducts regular inspections; and adjusts resources to meet changing campus needs and service expectations.
  • Personnel Management: Provides direct supervision and leadership for Grounds personnel, including hiring, training, scheduling, performance management, coaching, and employee development. Establishes clear performance expectations, promotes teamwork and accountability, and ensures employees are properly trained in equipment operation, work practices, and safety requirements.
  • Landscape, Turf & Tree Management: Develops and manages comprehensive maintenance programs for campus turf, trees, landscape beds, irrigation systems, and other planted areas. Establishes appropriate standards and practices for plant selection, pruning, tree health and hazard management, fertilization, irrigation, pest management, and long-term replacement and renewal.
  • Winter Weather & Emergency Response: Leads Grounds operations during snow, ice, severe weather, and other campus emergencies affecting exterior areas. Monitors weather conditions, develops staffing and treatment plans, maintains adequate inventories of materials and equipment, and coordinates timely response for roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and building approaches to support campus safety and continuity.
  • Exterior Campus & Site Infrastructure: Monitors the condition of campus grounds and exterior site infrastructure, including sidewalks, plazas, roads, curbs, parking areas, site furnishings, drainage systems, and other exterior assets. Identifies deficiencies and coordinates maintenance and repairs with other Facilities Operations units, Design & Construction, contractors, and other appropriate parties.
  • Campus Events & Special Projects: Coordinates Grounds resources and site preparation for commencement, move-in, major university events, outdoor activities, VIP visits, and other special campus needs. Works collaboratively with campus partners to ensure exterior spaces are appropriately prepared, maintained, and restored following events.
  • Capital Projects & Campus Planning: Coordinates with Design & Construction Management and other campus stakeholders on projects affecting University grounds. Reviews plans and specifications for maintainability, plant and material selection, irrigation, drainage, site access, and conformance with campus standards; participates in installation inspections, project acceptance, warranty inspections, and turnover of new or renovated landscapes to Facilities Operations. This expands the current D&CM coordination responsibility.
  • Budget, Procurement & Contractor Management: Develops, administers, and monitors Grounds operating budgets; plans equipment and vehicle replacement; develops scopes of work and assists with bids, RFPs, and procurement activities; manages vendor and contractor performance; and ensures resources are used effectively and within established budget requirements.
  • Equipment, Fleet & Asset Management: Manages the effective use, maintenance, inventory, and lifecycle replacement of Grounds vehicles, mowers, utility vehicles, snow-removal equipment, small equipment, irrigation systems, and other assigned assets. Develops long-range equipment replacement plans and ensures equipment is maintained and stored appropriately.
  • Work Management & Continuous Improvement: Uses WebTMA, GIS, inspections, work history, service levels, performance measures, and other available data to plan and evaluate Grounds operations. Identifies opportunities to improve productivity, service quality, staffing practices, equipment utilization, and work methods while maintaining appropriate campus standards. This gives some operational purpose to the technology requirements already listed in the description.
  • Safety, Regulatory Compliance & Environmental Stewardship: Ensures Grounds operations comply with applicable University policies and federal, state, and local requirements related to employee safety, pesticide and chemical application, hazardous materials, environmental protection, and equipment operation. Promotes sustainable grounds-management practices including responsible water use, plant selection, integrated pest management, soil health, and environmentally responsible application of fertilizers, pesticides, and snow/ice treatment materials.
  • Campus Coordination & Long-Range Planning: Develops effective working relationships with Facilities Operations, Design & Construction Management, Environmental Heath and Safety, campus departments, contractors, and other stakeholders. Contributes grounds expertise to the Campus Master Plan and other long-range planning efforts and develops annual and multi-year plans for landscape renewal, equipment replacement, staffing, and service improvements that support the University's goals and campus experience. This retains the useful part of the existing strategic-planning language without positioning the Grounds Manager as the person setting the University's overall landscape strategy.
