As an Economist II - Market Design at MISO, you'll play an important role in evaluating how our wholesale electricity markets are performing today while helping design how they need to operate in the future. You'll use economic, statistical, and market analysis to understand market outcomes, identify trends and opportunities for improvement, and help develop solutions that support competitive, efficient, and reliable electricity markets.

You'll work alongside economists, engineers, market experts, and technology teams to evaluate and advance market design changes. You'll also help translate complex economic analysis into clear findings and recommendations for internal teams, leadership, and MISO stakeholders.

In One Year, You'll Know You're Successful If:

You can independently evaluate market performance, identify meaningful economic trends or issues, and translate your analysis into recommendations that improve MISO's markets. You'll be contributing to new or enhanced market design initiatives and helping evaluate changes to market rules, models, algorithms, and policies that improve efficiency, competitiveness, reliability, and overall market performance.

As Our Economist II - Market Design, You Will:

  • Perform statistical, econometric, and economic analyses of wholesale electricity market operations, including participant activity, pricing trends, supply and demand imbalances, market anomalies, and overall market efficiency.
  • Develop and evaluate new or enhanced wholesale electricity market design initiatives as industry and grid needs continue to evolve.
  • Assess the economic impact of proposed market changes on market structure, participant behavior, competitiveness, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Conduct economic modeling and quantitative analysis to evaluate market outcomes, data quality, and the effectiveness of proposed market rule and tariff changes.
  • Develop and monitor key market performance indicators to evaluate market conditions and identify trends or opportunities for improvement.
  • Apply statistical and econometric methods to complex market datasets to identify relationships, trends, and potential market design issues.
  • Support recommendations and implementation of improvements to market models, optimization algorithms, rules, and policy provisions.
  • Review MISO market systems and outcomes for alignment with tariff requirements and recommend system or tariff modifications when appropriate.

We're Looking for Someone With:

  • Master's degree in Economics.
  • At least four (4) years of job-related experience.
  • Specific experience in statistical and econometric analysis.

Experience in one or more of the following areas would also be beneficial:

  • Econometric modeling.
  • Wholesale electricity market analysis or design.
  • Optimization algorithms.
  • Energy economics.
  • Analysis of large and complex market datasets.

While not required, it would be advantageous to have some of the following:

  • PhD in Economics or a related discipline.
  • Previous deregulated wholesale electricity market or utility experience.
  • Previous energy industry experience with a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) or RTO market participant.
  • Experience applying economic and econometric methods to electricity or other complex markets.

If you enjoy digging into complex market questions, working with data, and using economics to help shape decisions that have a real impact on the reliability and efficiency of the electric grid, we'd like to hear from you.
