Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures is committed to research and teaching at all levels in German, Russian and several other Germanic, Central European, and Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. One of the most vibrant departments of its kind in the nation, GSLL is closely linked with interdisciplinary programs including UNC's INSITE-Europe, UNC Film Studies, and the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies. We are also home to the Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies, one of the country's leading graduate programs in German.
Position Summary
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time, tenured position at the Professor or Associate Professor rank specializing in 20th- and 21st-century German Studies. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2027.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an active commitment to research and scholarship, teach courses across the undergraduate and graduate curricula, including advanced language courses, and participate in service activities supporting the department and the Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Ph.D. (or related degree) in German Studies, Comparative Literature, or a related discipline, and command native or near-native competence in English and German.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
We are especially interested in candidates with demonstrated research expertise in German film and television, media studies, visual culture, cultural studies, or related fields.
