| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |

| Position Summary |
The Practice Director serves as a senior operational and strategic leader within the Gillings School's practice enterprise, reporting to the Associate Dean for Practice and working in close collaboration with the Director of the North Carolina Institute for Public Health (
NCIPH), faculty, staff, students, and high-level external partners across North Carolina and the country to help develop, refine, and deliver on the School's practice strategy; lead key practice initiatives; track impact; communicate progress; and ensure that the Gillings School is measurably improving the public's health.
The Practice Director holds primary responsibility for designing, implementing, and evaluating the Gillings NC Practice Hubs. This includes leading co-development with community partners, facilitating engagement between Gillings' academic and practice resources and local communities, and developing long-term student practica, internship, and fellowship opportunities with governments, health care organizations, non-profits, and businesses. The Practice Director leads key governance structures including the internal Practice Coordinating Committee, the external Practice Advisory Committee, and the North Carolina academic public health practice network, and co-leads the development and implementation of a practice funding strategic plan in partnership with the Associate Dean for Practice and Advancement.
In addition to project leadership, the Practice Director oversees program administration including practice metrics development, health data monitoring, impact tracking and reporting, and benchmarking of practice strategies and portfolios across peer schools of public health.This role also directs all practice-related communications, including the Gillings practice web presence, school-wide and community-facing communications, and the development of advancement materials in support of practice fundraising goals.
This position will report to the Associate Dean for Practice. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Project management skills and relevant program management and/or public health practice experience.
Understanding and sensitivity to diversity and cultural differences; ability to work effectively with diverse individuals from multicultural settings.
Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Capacity to perform in a fast-paced, high-profile environment.
Proactive self-starter.
Excellent judgment and people skills.
Some weekend and evening work and travel are required. |
| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Prefer a candidate with a Masters' degree in public health or closely related field and at least five years of relevant program management and/or public health practice experience. |
