Department: School of Medicine, Office of the Dean, IT Shared Services

Job Title: Senior IT Application Developer

Position #: 00854222 - Requisition #: 41558

Job Summary:

The Senior IT Application Developer serves as a senior technical contributor responsible for the design, development, enhancement, integration, and ongoing support of School of Medicine applications, including those supporting faculty affairs, finance, and research administration.

This position works across the full application lifecycle, from design and development through testing, deployment, and production support, including maintenance, modernization, and migration of existing applications. The role partners with the Data Team, project management, business stakeholders, security and compliance, and other developers to translate business needs into secure, maintainable solutions.

The successful candidate will bring hands-on development experience, strong technical judgment, and the ability to independently investigate complex problems, make technical decisions, and own application work from design through production support.

The work model for this position is hybrid, as determined by the School of Medicine Office of the Dean, Information Services department.

Key Responsibilities:

Application Design & Development (40%)

  • Design, develop, and enhance School of Medicine applications, including front-end interfaces, application logic, services, and back-end components built with .NET/C# and JavaScript.

  • Translate functional and technical requirements into application designs and make technical design and architecture decisions.

  • Apply secure coding, accessibility, usability, performance, and maintainability standards and data-protection requirements such as HIPAA and FERPA throughout development.

Application Maintenance, Enhancements & Technical Debt (25%)

  • Maintain and enhance existing production applications, including legacy applications requiring modernization or migration.

  • Evaluate existing code and architecture and perform refactoring and upgrades to reduce technical debt while maintaining continuity of critical business services.

  • Balance new feature development with application lifecycle, maintenance, security, and sustainability requirements.

Database, API & Systems Integration, Release Management (20%)

  • Design and maintain SQL Server database components, queries, stored procedures, and data models, along with RESTful APIs and integrations with internal and external systems.

  • Conduct peer code reviews, mentor other developers, and maintain code through approved version-control practices in GitHub.

  • Follow established change, release-management, and CI/CD practices across development, testing/staging, and production environments, partnering with QA and project teams to validate acceptance criteria before deployment.

Production Support (15%)

  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and production support, resolving defects, performance issues, and integration failures.

  • Maintain technical and release documentation, including architecture, integrations, dependencies, configuration, and support procedures, to reduce reliance on undocumented institutional knowledge.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements and explain technical options, constraints, risks, and trade-offs.
