Senior Shutdown & Work Planning Manager

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
sick time, tuition assistance, 401(k)
United States, California, Berkeley

Oct 29, 2026

The Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is seeking a Senior Shutdown & Work Planning Manager to join our Project & Facilities Management Group. This senior operational leadership position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of one of the world's leading scientific user facilities. You will lead complex shutdown and work planning activities, coordinate across technical and facilities organizations, and oversee work management systems and processes that support facility maintenance, infrastructure improvements, and long-term operational readiness. Working closely with ALS operations, ALS-U project teams, Facilities, and other key partners, you will help coordinate critical activities that support the facility's ongoing operations and its transition to the next generation of scientific discovery.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility that produces exceptionally bright soft and hard x-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared light. With a strong scientific reputation, expert staff, and advanced capabilities, the ALS attracts thousands of academic and industrial users each year in condensed matter and quantum materials, energy sciences, biosciences, earth and planetary sciences and more.

The ALS is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve 15,000 users annually. Co-located with the Molecular Foundry, NERSC supercomputing center, and Berkeley Lab's materials, chemical sciences, biosciences, and other divisions, it provides an ideal collaborative environment for innovative scientific discoveries.

The ALS is a global leader in soft x-ray science, and aims to maintain its leadership with ALS-U, a major project to upgrade the facility to a fourth-generation light source. This upgrade will position the facility among the brightest soft x-ray light sources in the world, offering capabilities that no other facility can provide.

The Advanced Light Source is undergoing a major transformation through the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project. This upgrade will replace the existing storage ring with a next-generation accelerator, making the ALS one of the world's brightest sources of soft X-rays. The enhanced capabilities will allow scientists to study materials with unprecedented precision, enabling new discoveries in quantum materials, energy technologies, electronics, and biological sciences. As the Senior Shutdown & Work Planning Manager, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute to this historic transformation, helping lay the operational foundation for the next generation of scientific discovery at the ALS.

At Level 4, you will:

  • Lead work planning and coordination for a broad portfolio of maintenance, installation, facility, and infrastructure activities across the ALS, applying work-planning best practices and LBNL/DOE requirements to ensure appropriate technical support and review.
  • Plan and coordinate long-term ALS and ALS-U shutdown activities, excluding the ALS-U dark time, as well as regular short maintenance downtimes. Ensure planned work is documented in MAXIMO, appropriately scheduled, and clearly communicated to stakeholders.
  • Integrate ALS-U activities into ongoing ALS operations, including coordinating pre-dark-period ALS-U work during both shutdown and operational periods.
  • Plan and execute small facility-related projects and serve as the day-to-day ALS client representative for Facilities and Project & Infrastructure Management Division projects, ensuring work is coordinated with ALS operational needs and priorities.
  • Serve as an ALS Complex Building Manager, supporting the reliability, performance, safety, and overall condition of multiple facilities with complex utility systems and specialized infrastructure.
  • Coordinate maintenance and installation activities involving organizations outside of ALS, including LBNL Facilities teams and external contractors performing work outside of dark-time activities.
  • Partner with the ALS Safety Team and EHS Division SMEs as necessary to ensure hazards are identified and controlled ensuring alignment of maintenance, installation, and shutdown activities with safety requirements and review processes.
  • Oversee the ALS Work Planning System and MAXIMO environment, including maintaining the work-planning database, supporting effective use of the system, and training staff on work-planning processes and tools.
  • Expand the use of MAXIMO to strengthen preventive maintenance programs across ALS technical systems in preparation for the ALS-U era.
  • Manage asset integration associated with ALS-U, including adding new assets to MAXIMO, incorporating available asset documentation, and retiring assets that are being decommissioned. Identify and advocate for the resources needed to successfully complete this work.
  • Support the overall condition, upkeep, and workplace standards of ALS facilities, working with Photon Sciences representatives and other partners to maintain appropriate facility standards.
  • Represent ALS on work-planning matters with LBNL organizations, other national laboratories, external organizations, and auditing agencies, and participate in relevant professional conferences as appropriate.
  • Recommend improvements to policies, procedures, and work processes affecting maintenance, installation, modification, and operational activities at ALS.
  • Provide work leadership to the Facility Management and Safety Administrator and help establish priorities, expectations, and coordination of assigned work.
  • Occasionally be tasked with emergency work planning duties outside of normal business hours or on weekends for major equipment failures that affect facility operations.

In Addition to the Responsibilities Above, at Level 5 You Will:
