Position: Central Processing Educator

Department: Central Processing Department (CPD)

Schedule: 40 Hours, Days - 4 10 hour shifts

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reports to the CPD Director are responsible for assessing, planning, coordinating, and evaluating orientation, continuing education, and in-service programs for staff that are competency-based. Recommends improvements in the quality of services provided by the Central Processing Department. Serves as a resource to staff.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Knowledge and Skills


  • Implements all aspects of the training and orientation program including, job shadowing teaching formal classes as part orientation programs for new employees and affiliating students.

  • Performs systematic follow-up procedure with all trainees and orientees to ensure competency of basic Central Processing skills and adequate integration into their particular technical role.

  • Provides feedback on orientee's and trainees' work performance and recommends employee continuation of employment.

  • Prepares and trains new CPD staff to ensure that practices and policies of BMC are followed. Identifies skills sets and follow-ups within appropriate plan.

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and interview job candidates and make recommendations regarding appropriate fit for organization and unit.

  • Coordinates with Operating Room Charge Nurses and Operating Room Nurse Educators to schedule and administer new employee and/or CPD student clinical rotations to the Operating Rooms.

  • Evaluates, assesses department to develop training program. Tracks, analyzes and reports on enrollment, completion patterns, and other related activities to training, developing base data and using statistical tables and graphic displays of database information.

  • Educates staff to new CPD technologies, changes in policies and procedures and evaluates the effectiveness of such innovations.

  • Coordinates CPD programs as assigned such as Competency Program, Orientation, In-service Programs, Maintain employee records, etc.

  • Monitors progress of education and completion of CPD technicians preparing for certification exam and maintaining certification.

  • Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with all levels of staff and customers and to conduct group and individual instruction.

  • Demonstrates well-developed communications skills, both verbal and written, necessary to communicate in an articulate and effective manner in front of groups. Relates to and provides effective feedback to the learner in a manner that is patient, constructive and enhances self-esteem.


Technical and Clinical Competence


  • Assists CPD in maintaining JCAHO standards.

  • Develops, implements, reviews and revised annual competency program for CPD employees as it relates to CPD technology.

  • Demonstrates ability to assess the need for, plan implement and evaluate high-quality, cost effective educational programs for CPD staff.



  • Serves as a Liaison between institutional departments, partners and groups to establish collaborative programs.

  • Utilizes the Incident Reporting system for trending areas in need of improvement. Follows up on incident report communications to assist in the development of root cause analysis and make recommendations on resolutions as well as develop training materials to aid in the reduction of future defects.


Quality Improvement and Research


  • Remains knowledgeable of unit based QI projects and assists with developing training plans and ability to properly address QI findings.

  • Utilizes quality improvement and evidence based findings to enhance CPD.

  • Demonstrates ability to critically think and conduct research appropriately and effectively properly, using appropriate evidence based resources in order to verify and validate the correct processes and techniques.


Professional Development


  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining current knowledge and competency in CPD technology and AORN and AAMI standards and practice as well as additional regulated practices as they related to sterilization practices.

  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining current knowledge of adult education theory and teaching methods.


Other Duties


  • Provides assistance on special projects and coordination of CPD initiatives as requested.

  • Attends meetings as required.

  • Utilizes BMC's Cultural Beliefs and Hospital Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate CPD's and the hospital's mission.

  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.



  • Performs other duties as assigned or as necessary.

  • Provide Educational support to employees on all shifts and weekends


Must adhere to all of BMC's RESPECT behavioral standards.

EDUCATION:

Associate's Degree, or equivalent combination of formal education and experience. Bachelor's Degree preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Certification by Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) , or as, Central Board of Sterile Processing Departments (CBSPD) or other related recognized certification such as an Operating Room Technician.

EXPERIENCE:

Must have 3-5 years of recent experience as an Educator or Supervisor in Central Processing/Operating Room or 5-7 years of experience as a Central Processing Tech with progressive responsibility.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:


  • Ability to apply principles of adult learning required.

  • Analytical ability to solve technical clinical issues, conduct quality improvement, and research utilization projects.

  • Advanced interpersonal and writing skills to develop and conduct educational programs, presentations, communicate with the interdisciplinary team, and perform leadership responsibilities.

  • Basic computer proficiency is inclusive of the ability to access and enter data from computerized information systems.

  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work. '

  • Ability to effectively evaluate the clinical technical competence of trainees and probationary employees.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Multilingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the employee populations served by the medical center preferred.

  • Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities following practice setting.
