About the Role

As a public safety communications radio systems engineer, you will collaborate with team members to support the requirements definition, conceptual design, development, testing, and integration of complex, specialized hardware and software systems to help usher in a new era in public safety communications.

This position may be based out of NYSTEC's Rome, Albany, or NYC offices.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance on the conceptual design of radio frequency (RF) wireless communication systems and technology in general, and with particular focus on public safety applications.
  • Develop detailed requirements for client RF wireless communication systems and related subsystems.
  • Provide technical guidance during client contract procurement and implementation: proposal development, bid evaluation, contract negotiation, implementation, and quality assurance.
  • Define and document technical best practices for NYSTEC and mentor junior team members on same.
  • Conduct implementation roadmap planning for client system upgrades and replacements.
  • Develop strong and enduring collaborative working relationships with county and state agency clients.


Required Qualifications

  • Strong background in public safety wireless communications.
  • Experience working with large county or statewide P-25 and analog systems.
  • Experience with RF coverage modeling, RF design, RF measurement, and optimization.
  • Experience with land mobile radio (LMR) site equipment configuration and testing.
  • Working knowledge of microwave, circuit-based, and fiber backhaul.
  • Project management skills and knowledge of database reporting tools.
  • Ability to serve as a mentor to less experienced personnel.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills, exceptional interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage and develop key relationships with colleagues and clients through collaborative thinking with a strong customer focus.
  • Experience participating in the business development and sales process (proposal writing, presentations, etc.).
  • Ability to travel throughout New York State, interacting with clients and employees at client and corporate offices.


Preferred/Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the operations of public safety organization.
  • Knowledge of other wireless technologies, such as Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA), Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Wi-Fi, long-term evolution (LTE), and embedded systems.
  • Knowledge of Internet Protocol (IP)-based dispatch consoles and voice recorders.
  • Professional level certification in wireless communications (e.g., Electronics Technicians Association (ETA), certified wireless network administrator (CWNA), Microsoft wireless communications engineering technologies).
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or a similar discipline,


Education and Experience

A bachelor's degree, preferably in electrical engineering or a similar discipline, and five years of LMR engineering experience. An equivalent combination of advanced education, training, and experience will be considered.

The pay range for this position is $79,793-$109,716.20 per year.
