The Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant (CSTFA) supports the cardiothoracic operating room under the direction or supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon during surgical intervention. The CSTA acts as the cardiothoracic surgeon's assistant by applying traction or counter-traction as needed, helping to maintain hemostasis during surgery and assisting with wound closure at completion of surgical procedure. Demonstrates competencies for cardiothoracic surgical procedures, techniques, and equipment required for the cardiovascular operating room. The CSTFA functions interdependently with the cardiovascular surgeon and applies knowledge, skill, and judgment necessary to assist the cardiovascular surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient. Performs various tasks and duties to provide technical assistance and support to medical/surgical staff and personnel during surgical procedures. May specialize in one or more services.

REQUIRED:
1. Graduate of Accredited Surgical Technologist First Assistant Program. First Assistant Certification required. 2. Two years of cardiac surgery experience. 3. Knowledge of cardiac surgery procedures pertaining to heart revascularization, valve repair/replacement, aortic dissection, and conduction system, equipment/instrument operation and care, and implant preparation. 4. Knowledge of advanced anatomy and physiology. 5. Knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass. 6. Knowledge of advanced sterile technique and asepsis 7. BCLS certification. 8. Knowledge of medical ethics. 9. Good vision, hearing and manual dexterity: ability to transfer patients safe from bed/stretcher to operating room table Technical Competencies: - Skin prep - Laser Safety - CPR
