Overview
The Outdoor Instructor will be responsible for planning, organizing, and teaching assigned outdoor recreational activities for USU students within the USU Eastern Campus Life Department. This role includes grading, engaging with students, and ensuring they understand course expectations. The ideal candidate will have a passion for promoting physical fitness, wellness, and a positive lifestyle. Position will run from 1-6-2025 to 4-30-2025.

Responsibilities
  • Planning, organizing, and leading one trip within the 7-week course related to the specific outdoor recreation class.
  • Conducting an initial class on the first week of the semester to review trip details (time, place, travel, etc.), and discuss needs, safety, and equipment.
  • Collaborating with the Campus Life Department to enhance the outdoor program course.
  • Following all University policies and procedures for taking students on trips and engaging with students.
  • Ensuring all equipment is properly maintained, safe, and ready for use.
  • Assessing students' skills, participation, and knowledge throughout the course and providing constructive feedback.
  • Encouraging a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students.
  • Keeping detailed records of trips and student participation.
  • Staying updated with current trends and practices in outdoor education and recreation.
  • Reviewing the class course fee annually and recommending any necessary adjustments.

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in related outdoor activity.
  • Knowledge of and experience in planning and organizing trips and events.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of outdoor activity related to the course.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety protocols, first aid, and emergency response strategies.
  • Familiarity with instructional methods and teaching strategies suitable for outdoor education.
  • Awareness of university policies and procedures related to student activities and trips.
  • Knowledge of environmental stewardship and Leave No Trace principles.
  • Understanding of how to properly use and maintain outdoor recreational equipment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for delivering instructions, safety briefings, and feedback.
  • Excellent organizational skills to plan, coordinate, and execute trips and activities.
  • Effective problem-solving skills to handle unexpected situations and emergencies.
  • Proficiency in teaching and engaging students in a hands-on learning environment.
  • Competence in using relevant technology and software for scheduling, communication, and documentation.
  • Ability to lead and motivate students in outdoor settings.
  • Ability to participate in and lead physically demanding outdoor activities.
  • Flexibility to adapt plans based on weather conditions, student needs, or other variables.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in high-stress or emergency situations.
  • Keen attention to detail in planning trips, ensuring safety, and maintaining equipment.

Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting (50 pounds) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.
