Cloud Network Engineer

Compensation: $125,000 - $135,000 (depending on experience)

Position Overview:
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at the University of Minnesota is seeking an experienced cloud network engineer to support the development and implementation of cloud technologies that advance our core mission of academics, research, and outreach. Candidates should have full lifecycle experience with hybrid clouds including: architecture/design, build, and ongoing operational support. This is an exciting opportunity to define and operationalize cloud services in multiple cloud platforms through robust automation and CI/CD pipelines. Ideal candidates will have excellent technical and interpersonal skills (elevated EQ), an ability to work with users and technologists with varying levels of experience and a strong commitment to supporting an environment of trust, collaboration, and mission-focused work.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement cloud-native network standards across varying cloud-platforms using infrastructure as code.
  • Design and implement virtual private cloud (VPC) and manage wide area network services.
  • Work alongside other cloud engineers to automate the networking components of Infrastructure Landing Zones across cloud platforms.
  • Serve as the primary connector between the traditional network team and the cloud team, facilitating collaboration and understanding.
  • Provide deep technical expertise and guidance on cloud network design, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Promote the value and importance of cloud integration within the broader scope of the university's network strategy.
  • Develop detailed technical processes and supporting documentation for cloud services
  • Lead troubleshooting and service restoration efforts for cloud services
  • Configure and fine-tune monitoring, alerting, and event management for cloud network services
  • Work with product owner, and cloud architects to define technical deliverables for requests and features based on internal stakeholder needs using Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and agile processes

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Education / Experience - BA/BS plus 4 years of network engineering experience, or a master's degree plus at least two years of experience.
  • WAN - Hands-on experience configuring cloud WAN services, (e.g., AWS Cloud WAN, Azure Virtual WAN)
  • Traditional Network Engineering - Strong configuration and troubleshooting skills for routers, switches, firewalls, and DNS
  • Cloud Network Engineering - Strong configuration and troubleshooting skills for virtual networks (VPC's), route tables, security groups, and access control lists.
  • Infrastructure as Code - Experienced in the use of Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM, or BICEP to deploy consistent configurations across cloud environments.
  • Documentation - Experience in creating architecture designs and training materials that inform team members as well as technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8 or more years of network engineering experience
  • Experience migrating legacy applications to cloud environments while adhering to cloud native standards.
  • Cisco CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+, or other network certification
  • AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialt
  • Azure Network Engineer Associate Certification
  • Experience with FortiNet or other Enterprise Firewalls
  • Experience with F5 or other traffic management platforms
  • Experience using cloud monitoring AWS CloudWatch or Azure Network Watcher for cloud monitoring
  • Experience with log analysis, monitoring, alerting, and event management
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $125,000 - $135,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
