Job Information

Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) is a national leader in integrating community-based medical education and clinical care. We are dedicated to training socially accountable physicians, scientists, and health professionals committed to serving the community. The College of Medicine is an academic and clinical affiliate of Baptist Health, South Florida's (BHSF) largest not-for-profit health system.

BHSF and HWCOM aim to develop a catalog of graduate medical education (GME) programs based out of BHSF's largest hospital, Baptist Hospital Miami (BHM). BHM is a nearly one-thousand bed hospital with large on-campus capacity for complex patient services such as oncology, interventional cardiovascular and neurological services. There are currently no GME programs based out of BHM and this position presents the candidate with a unique opportunity to develop an entire training ecosystem. In collaboration with Baptist Health, the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) will have a critical role in developing a statutory teaching hospital that will expand undergraduate and graduate medical education programs, clinical research and patient care that will benefit the entire South Florida community. This role will oversee the development, expansion and implementation of numerous new GME programs, with over 200 residents and fellows, in a state-of-the-art training facility.

BHSF and HWCOM seek applicants for a full-time, non-tenure position at the rank of associate or full professor. The DIO, in collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (SADAA), will provide overall strategic and executive operational leadership for GME. The DIO, serving as the Associate Dean of GME, will be a direct report to the SADAA and will also have a reporting relationship to a senior physician executive at Baptist Health. The DIO will be responsible for all administrative oversight of the Office of Graduate Medical Education (OGME), including FIU-Baptist Health joint programs as applicable.

This individual, in collaboration with a Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), will have authority and responsibility for the oversight and administration of each of the Sponsoring Institution's ACGME-accredited programs, as well as for ensuring compliance with the ACGME Institutional, Common, specialty-/subspecialty-specific Program, and Recognition Requirement. The successful applicant will be responsible but not limited to: provide oversight of institution's ACGME-accredited residency programs and fellowships; in collaboration with GME Leadership Team, develop the vision and direction of GME in alignment with the HWCOM-BHSF strategic plan and goals; approve program letters of agreement (PLAs) that govern relationships between each program and each participating site providing a required assignment for residents/fellows in that program; oversee submissions of the Annual Update for each program and the Sponsoring Institution to the ACGME and after GMEC approval, oversee the submission of applications for ACGME accreditation and recognition; request for voluntary withdrawal of accreditation and recognition, and requests for changes in residency and fellowship program complements; chair the GMEC; and provide administrative oversight for all ACGME required activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Advanced clinical degree (MD or DO).

Licensure/Certification: Florida Medical License (current or eligible).

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in GME such as former DIO or Assistant DIO, and/or 5 or more years as Program Director of an ACGME-accredited program, and training in medical education related to faculty development.
  • Previous experience in establishing new GME programs is highly desirable.
  • Additional experience providing administrative oversight for ACGME institutional and program accreditation, including authoring program applications, managing ACGME site visits, self-study and other reports.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of an Associate and/or Professor academic rank.
  • Management and leadership skills as required for membership on the Executive Leadership team. Commitment to patient and team centered medicine. Outstanding interpersonal relationships with peers, supervisors, and staff. Demonstrated commitment to process improvement. Desire to be involved in GME at the regional and national level.
