At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This position is part of the Advanced Concepts & Enterprise Engineering (ACE) business unit. ACE develops next-generation concepts and systems to advance our future of living and working in space sustainably.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

We are a diverse team with a range of abilities and skills, emphasizing safety and problem-solving. This role will have a direct impact on the future of space exploration and will require your dedication and attention to detail in ensuring safe space flight. Come join us in making Blue Origin's vision of millions of people living and working in space a reality, benefiting our planet Earth.

Join our diverse and dedicated team of engineers and technicians in Advanced Concepts & Enterprise Engineering (ACE). Contribute to the design, installation, trade studies, modification, analysis, repair, and testing of life support chemicals, analytical equipment, test rigs, and development hardware for the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) in the Orbital Reef program. Help develop engineering artifacts to support hardware fabrication, assembly, verification, test, and operations.

Specifically, you will share in the team's impact on all aspects of designing, building, testing and flying Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) flight hardware.

  • The ECLS System is composed of the essential hardware to allow humans to safely inhabit space. ECLSS circulates air around the vehicle picking up carbon dioxide, humidity and trace contaminants to be scrubbed and provides oxygen for breathing. The internal cabin pressure is maintained and monitored. Clean drinking water is provided to the crew. The ECLS system also monitors air quality as well as emergencies such as rapid depressurization and fire and counteracts them.

Responsibilities:

  • Ownership of developing a closed loop system architecture for Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) subsystems, which includes multiple in-space habitats: Air Handling and Revitalization, Water Recovery Systems, Waste Management, Fire Detection & Suppression, Air and Water Quality Monitoring, Controls and Software, Human in the Loop Development and Testing.

  • Develop, release, and support engineering artifacts throughout the product lifecycle to enable flawless hardware fabrication, assembly, verification, test, and operations.

  • Implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide expert technical information.

  • Research and analyze designs, specifications, manuals, and other data to determine the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.

  • Develop technical solutions and successfully implement development, testing, and analysis to support technology maturation and down-selects.

  • Collaborate with teams from different functions to ensure the seamless integration of ECLSS systems with other spacecraft subsystems.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in chemical, mechanical, electrical, aerospace, or environmental engineering or a related engineering field, or equivalent experience.

  • Deep technical experience (7+ years) in designing and analyzing human crewed space systems, with a focus on spacecraft such as the International Space Station. Also, should have at least 2 years of experience leading a team or project.

  • Subject Matter Expertise in ECLS system assemblies, interfaces, and architectures.

  • Experience across the product life cycle (pre-conceptual design through field support).

  • Ability to apply judgment, developed through theory and experience, to assess the appropriate level of detail required in an ECLS System model.

  • Demonstrated understanding of fundamental chemical processes, thermodynamics, and fluid systems.

  • Showcased technical expertise in analyzing and designing fluid systems and chemical processes for spacecraft life support or environmental control systems in various settings.

  • Experience in researching and developing technologies for life support systems in extreme environments, like water purification and air revitalization.

  • Familiarity and experience with hands-on prototyping and design, experiment design, test methods, and general laboratory skills.

  • Experience managing and working collaboratively in small teams on fast-paced projects.

  • History of developing solutions with partially defined requirements and changing criteria.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in aerospace, electrical, mechanical, chemical, physics, or related subject area.

  • Experience with aircraft or spacecraft life support/environmental control (ECLSS) technologies and architectures.

  • Experience designing complex electronic systems combining hardware, firmware, and software.

  • Experience in designing important aerospace flight hardware with a focus on safety.

  • Exposure to the development of high-reliability, radiation-tolerant, radiation-hardened flight hardware intended for prolonged exposure to extreme space environments.

  • Working knowledge of aerospace materials and treatments.

  • Experience with preparing and completing test planning, test readiness reviews, and test conduct.

  • Experience with test facility instrumentation and Data Acquisition and Control Systems.

  • Ability to cross between analysis and design to build and test activities.

  • Strong project management and team leadership skills.

  • Proficiency in Creo or other CAD design tools.

  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, CFD, COMSOL, and other multi-physics modeling tools.
