Job Summary

#CA-SS

This position provides comprehensive emotional and spiritual services to patients and or caregivers, as well as all staff and physicians dealing with spiritual distress. Such services include making initial spiritual assessment, ongoing support, liaison with the spiritual community, and participation in overall bereavement assessment and follow-up. This position ministers to a diverse population and must be sensitive to all beliefs, cultural and ethnic heritage and spiritual history while addressing conflicts. The chaplain performs other duties as assigned and may be required to serve at other UC Davis sites as UC Davis Health needs warrant.

As a Chaplain Fellow, functions as a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) educator/mentor working towards certification as an Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) certified educator. The Chaplain collaborates with other members of the Interdisciplinary team to provide education, participates in quality initiatives, and tracks chaplaincy activities data and outcomes. Provides coordination and support for the Volunteer Chaplains and serves as a member of the professional advisory group.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Ordination or commissioning by one's faith group to serve as a religious leader and endorsement or official recognition by that faith group to function as a chaplain.
  • Certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: the Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).
  • Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or its equivalent in relevant training/experience.
  • Completion of at least 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education, accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • Experience in serving as a professional chaplain providing and applying current and dynamic spiritual care understandings and resources into practice.
  • Experience in providing spiritual and emotional support to front-line staff, allied health students (as appropriate) and other health care team members.
  • Experience and advanced knowledge in planning, implementing, and documenting a course of action involving patient care and other forms of spiritual care and guidance.
  • Experience in working with interdisciplinary teams ensuring the highest quality of care in meeting the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and families and providing expertise and resource on sensitive, unusual, complex and DEI cases.
  • In-depth understanding of professionalism and collaboration; ability to independently perform the full range of responsibilities within the scope of spiritual care within an interdisciplinary team; demonstrated broad job knowledge; ability to analyze problems / issues of diverse scope and to determine solutions.
  • Knowledge of a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, and of giving appropriate spiritual care in a multi-faith clinical setting.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short-term counseling to patients and families in a clinical environment. Skill in providing spiritual support and guidance on the issues of death, dying, grief, loss, and disability.
  • Knowledge of suicidal behavior; ability to assess lethality; and, ability to develop appropriate treatment plan.78. Ability to make independent clinical decisions in routine patient care matters.
  • Knowledge of community resources and mandated reporting requirements for Child Protective Services (CPS), Adult Protective Services (APS) and domestic violence.
  • Ability to identify one's own professional strengths and weaknesses and to engage in activities designed to enhance effectiveness and to make constructive use of feedback from peers, subordinates and supervisors.
  • Ability to participate in advanced care planning discussions.
  • Knowledge of legal implications for clinical practice.
  • Basic knowledge of performance improvement and research process.
  • Ability to represent the University, Patient Care Services (PCS), and Chaplaincy program in a professional manner.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Development/specialized Certification relating to the field of Chaplaincy/spiritual care (e.g., Palliative, bioethics, mental health).
  • Experience as a chaplain in a Level I trauma center
  • Knowledge of suicidal behavior, the ability to assess lethality, and the ability to develop appropriate treatment plan.
